DURHAM, N.C. -- J.J. Redick moved up to ninth on the all-time Duke scoring list with 24 points, Shelden Williams added 20 and the top-ranked Blue Devils prepared for their matchup with the second-ranked Longhorns by beating Penn 72-59 on Wednesday night.
Sean Dockery had 11 points for Duke (8-0), which travels to East Rutherford, N.J., on Saturday to meet Texas (8-0). Freshman Josh McRoberts had perhaps his best all-around game, finishing with eight points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocks following a little motivational speed from Redick late in the first half.
After McRoberts missed the first of two free throws, Redick walked from his spot near the 3-point line and got in his face. Whatever Redick said sure worked, since McRoberts appeared energized the remainder of the game.
He grabbed three rebounds over the next several possessions, freed up Redick with a nice screen, then finished off the half with a steal. The second half was more of the same for McRoberts, and he even got a chance to show off his open-court ability during one fast break.
The lanky 6-foot-10 forward rebounded a miss by the Quakers (3-3) and dribbled up court before getting the ball to Redick, who turned down an open jumper to feed Williams for a dunk. That made it 54-36 and seemingly put the game out of reach.
But Penn rallied behind David Whitehurst, who made three consecutive 3-pointers. Friedrich Ebede added a three-point play to cut the margin to 10. It still was 11 before McRoberts got inside for a layup and Redick swished a 3 that put Duke ahead 66-50, and the Quakers never threatened again.
No. 21 Maryland 87, W. Carolina 57
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Travis Garrison had a career-high 23 points and 14 rebounds for Maryland.
Ekene Ibekwe scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half and D.J. Strawberry added 13 points for the Terrapins (6-2), who led by only four at halftime.
Nik Caner-Medley grabbed 10 rebounds to become the 26th player in Maryland history to reach 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
Jared Outing led Western Carolina (5-6) with 12 points and Antonio Russell scored 11.
Maryland played without leading scorer Chris McCray, who injured his left ankle during the George Washington game. He was replaced in the starting lineup by Mike Jones, who scored six points.
Notre Dame 78, No. 22 Alabama 71
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Colin Falls scored 24 points and Notre Dame went 8-for-9 from the free throw line over the final 3 minutes.
Falls hit six 3-pointers in the first half as the Fighting Irish (3-2) built a 17-point lead and then held to snap a two-game losing streak.
The Crimson Tide (4-2) opened the second half with a 22-9 run to erase most of the deficit and cut it to one point on Ronald Steele's 3-pointer with 8:43 left. Falls hit his only 3-pointer of the second half to push the lead back to five points a minute later.
Chuck Davis had a career-high 29 points for Alabama on 13-of-18 shooting.
