City resident pleads guilty
A mistrial had been declared earlier this year.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Edward Dubose, 23, of Albert Street will be sentenced later after pleading guilty Wednesday to involuntary manslaughter in the killing of Marcus Bradley in 2001.
Dubose's trial was to begin Dec. 12 before Judge James C. Evans in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, but a plea agreement was reached between the prosecutor's office and Atty. Joseph W. Gardner, who represents Dubose.
A charge of aggravated murder was amended to involuntary manslaughter. Charges of possession of cocaine, trafficking in marijuana and failure to comply with the order of a police officer, all from a separate case, were dropped. In exchange, Dubose withdrew his earlier plea of innocent on the aggravated-murder charge.
The prosecution thinks that Edward Dubose's cousin, Cejanie Dubose, was the trigger man, Assistant Prosecutor Dennis Sarisky told the judge. Cejanie Dubose is serving an 18-year prison sentence after a jury found him guilty of complicity to murder with a gun specification.
Edward Dubose faces a maximum 10-year prison sentence.
Judge Evans declared a mistrial in Dubose's case last April after Dubose's previous attorney, Anthony P. Meranto, told the court that he had represented a defense witness in an unrelated matter. That created a potential conflict and appearance of impropriety, the judge said.
Bradley, also known as Marcus Moore, was found dead at Mercer Avenue and Hoffman Street. Bradley moved to Youngstown from Minnesota about a year before his death, police said.
