REGION
Browns sign Hunter
BEREA -- Free agent cornerback Pete Hunter signed with the Cleveland Browns, filling the roster spot that opened when rookie wide receiver Braylon Edwards was placed on injured reserve. A fifth-round pick in 2002, Hunter played three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys before being traded to the New York Jets on July 14. He was waived by the Jets on Aug. 10.
With the Cowboys, Hunter had 55 tackles and three interceptions. He should help strengthen a secondary missing its best player, cornerback Gary Baxter, who suffered a season-ending chest injury earlier this season.
Edwards tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while trying to make a catch in Sunday's loss to Jacksonville.
Edwards will need at least eight months to recover following surgery, which has yet to be scheduled because of swelling in his knee.
