CAMPBELL -- Call it a game of two halves.
The Boardman High boys basketball team controlled the first half against Campbell on Tuesday, taking a 30-21 halftime lead.
The second half was a different story as the Red Devils hit on 80 percent of their shots from the field to pull away for their second straight win, 69-56.
"It was a dog-fight early, then we got lucky and made some shots," said Campbell coach Brian Danilov. "We knew that their kids are tough and are going to play hard.
"You can't help but look good when you shoot good."
Shooting good might be the understatement of the year as Campbell hit on 10 of 15 in the third quarter and was a perfect 10 for 10 in the final eight minutes.
The scorers
Ed Deluca and Andrew Chifalo each scored six points in the first quarter as Boardman (1-1) took an 11-4 lead. Terrance Phillips scored nine of the first 10 Campbell points before a 3-pointer by Jermaine Richardson cut the deficit to 16-13 after the first quarter.
Campbell was just 3 of 14 from the field in the second quarter and Boardman opened up the advantage to nine at halftime.
The third quarter was all Campbell as the Red Devils tied the game at 32 on a basket by Tommy Hall. A charity toss by Hall gave the Red Devils the lead for good at 33-32 with 3:56 remaining and Boardman never led in the game again. Hall was scoreless in the first half and had nine points in the third, while Ryan Burton added seven for Campbell.
"We told them to slow down, take our time, and attack the rim at halftime," Danilov said. "A lot of the shots we were missing were because we were fading on them and we were trying to score too fast."
Campbell continued to scorch the nets in the fourth quarter as Bryant Burt scored eight points, Richardson six and Phillips five to pace the offense. Jon Kocun tried to keep the Spartans in it as he scored 11 of his team-high 16 points in the final eight minutes, including three long range shots.
Solid floor game
Trey Soares added a solid floor game for Campbell, scoring eight points to go along with eight assists, eight rebounds and three steals.
"Trey had a great game for us," said Danilov. "Most people that just look at a box score will not know just how big a game he had."
Phillips paced all scorers with 18 points, while Burt had 12, and Hall and Burton 11 each for Campbell. Chifalo was the only other Spartan in double figures with 11. Campbell won the rebounding battle 37-34 with Hall grabbing nine to pace the Red Devils, and Eric Johnson had seven off the bench for the Spartans.
