Lakeview rallies to down Poland; Alliance tops Fitch
Newton Falls lost to Rootstown at the buzzer.
CORTLAND -- The Poland High boys basketball team jumped out to a big lead but Lakeview regrouped and handed out a 54-34 setback on Tuesday.
Poland (1-1) took a 17-10 lead after one quarter and was in front 27-24 at the break.
Lakeview (2-0) held Poland to seven points after intermission but scored 30 points over the 16-minute span.
Dustin Opalka scored 21 points and hit five 3-point goals along the way for Lakeview. Eddie Mackiewicz controlled nine rebounds.
For Poland, Daniel Bennett and Louis Coppola evenly split 20 points.
Alliance 57, Fitch 43
AUSTINTOWN -- Alliance's 2-3 zone caused problems for Fitch in the first half as the Falcons fell behind, 23-13.
The game marked the debut of Fitch head coach Roger Day, whose Falcons have only one player back with experience.
It was that player, 6-5 senior forward James Wallace, who had a game-high 20 points. The three-year letterman also grabbed 20 rebounds. Keane Boyd added 10 points for Fitch, which closed within six points in the fourth quarter before Alliance pulled away.
"We'll get better as we go along," Day said.
Sebring 67, Leetonia 61
SEBRING -- A 27-point surge in the second quarter was a big difference for Sebring.
Behind 42-17, the Bears (1-1) outscored the Trojans 16-10 in the third quarter and 16-15 in the final 12 minutes of action.
The Trojans had four players in double figures in posting their second straight win. Jesse James led the attack with 22 points and he pulled down eight rebounds and had four assists. He tallied 16 of the 27 points in the third period.
The Bears also had four players in double figures. Corey Rauschenbach added 14, while Jon Williams, Andy Kisner and Ryan Weikart had 12, 11 and 10 apiece.
Corey Creamer pulled down 10 of his team 32 rebounds. Kisner had six assists and four steals.
Mineral Ridge 57, Badger 39
KINSMAN -- Making most of his 17 points via layup, senior point guard Wade Campbell paced Ridge, which led from the start.
Also for the Rams, senior forward Vance Keirsey added 13 points, five of which were free throws. Micah Hall and Keirsey were top rebounders, making 10 and eight, respectively, of Ridge's 40 total caroms.
Josh Shreevos had 10 points for Badger.
Rootstown 57, Newton Falls 56
NEWTON FALLS -- Kenny White made a layup at the buzzer for Rootstown (2-0).
Brent Vair scored 17 points and Cory Buso added 12 for the winners.
Matt Dillon and Joe Murphy led the Tigers (0-2) with 11 points. Travis McCartney added 10.
Southern 93, Heartland 41
SALINEVILLE -- The Indians put nine players in the scoring column with Anthony Castro leading the way with 24 points. He also had four rebounds and four steals.
Dan DeSellum and Chris Householder tallied 18 and 16 points respectively.
Cody Patterson paced Heartland Christian with 16 points and Mike Barborak finished with 10.
Youngstown Christian 75,Warren Christian 24
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dom Vitulio, Ed Gonda, Dave Colbert and Aaron Agresta scored 13, 12, 12 and 11 points respectively for the Eagles (1-1).
Tyler Moznec, Frank Powell and Mike Whire scored six points apiece for the Rams (4-2) who fell behind by 33 points (44-11) by the half.
Girls
SHARON -- The Sharon High girls built a commanding 41-22 lead by intermission, then cruised to a 74-35 victory over Cambridge Springs Tuesday.
Brittany Csatlos led the Steelers (3-0) with 24 points and she had six assists and three steals.
Janine McDonald added 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Cara Dolci had nine assists.
