NFL ROUNDUP News and notes
Raiders: Marques Tuiasosopo probably will get his shot as Oakland's starting quarterback this week. Coach Norv Turner is leaning on demoting the struggling Kerry Collins and plans to make his final decision before the Raiders practice on Wednesday to prepare for the New York Jets -- though it sure seems Turner has all but made up his mind. The coach already spoke to Collins about the potential change for Sunday's road game. "I wouldn't have brought it up if it wasn't something we're considering strongly," Turner said Monday on the heels of the Raiders' second straight defeat and fourth loss in five games, 34-10 at San Diego. "We're going to look at the quarterback situation and say, 'Hey, is it time to look at Tui?' With his mobility, would that help us?" The 26-year-old Tuiasosopo started one game in 2003 in place of injured 2002 MVP Rich Gannon, but hurt his knee during Oakland's third offensive series on a hard hit by Boss Bailey in a 23-13 loss at Detroit and hasn't played in a regular season game since.
Dolphins: Quarterback Gus Frerotte is expected to practice and play this week after sustaining a concussion Sunday against Buffalo. "He's fine today," coach Nick Saban said. Frerotte was hurt when he was sacked for a safety, leaving with Miami trailing 23-3 in the third quarter. Sage Rosenfels replaced him and rallied Miami to a 24-23 victory. Saban said Frerotte remains the No. 1 quarterback. "We're not making any changes at that position right now," the coach said. "This should not be an issue. We don't want it to be an issue. I know y'all are going to try to make it an issue." In the final 19 minutes, Rosenfels threw for 272 yards and two touchdowns, including the winning score on fourth down with 6 seconds left.
Jets: Jay Fiedler, who hurt his shoulder in September, doesn't seem to be any closer to playing. Coach Herman Edwards said Monday that Chad Pennington's backup, hurt seven plays after Pennington, will try to practice this week. If he doesn't get any better, Edwards said offseason surgery is an option. After a brief stint with Vinny Testaverde at the helm, the Jets have gone with Brooks Bollinger. That has not gone well, either. Bollinger is 0-5 as a starter and has led the Jets to one touchdown in those games. New York has the second-worst offense in the league and the worst scoring average -- 11.9 points. Even against the injury-depleted Patriots on Sunday, the Jets could hardly muster anything.
Jaguars: Cornerback Rashean Mathis broke a finger on his right hand Sunday at Cleveland and stayed there overnight to be treated for an open wound. Mathis injured his hand on the same play Browns rookie receiver Braylon Edwards tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee trying to make a leaping catch in the fourth quarter. Mathis, who leads the Jags with four interceptions, remained in Cleveland to get the wound treated and returned to Jacksonville on Monday. Del Rio said Mathis will practice Wednesday.
Titans: Wide receiver Roydell Williams had surgery on a broken right wrist Monday and will miss the rest of the season. The Titans (3-9) lost top rookie Brandon Jones last week to a torn right ACL. Williams started in his place Sunday in a 35-3 loss to Indianapolis but was hurt when a helmet hit his wrist in the first half. The fourth-round pick out of Tulane, has 21 catches for 299 yards. Tight end Erron Kinney, the Titans' top receiver with 54 catches, is expected to miss Sunday's game against Houston (1-11). Quarterback Steve McNair bruised his left shin and had a mild ankle sprain. Fisher said he'll likely miss practice Wednesday but is expected to work out Thursday.
Packers: Brett Favre suffered a cut on his right hand, his right forearm was bruised and he felt "overall kind of beat up" after Sunday's 19-7 loss to Chicago. "He played with it. And it doesn't seem to be any worse today than it was yesterday so I think he is going to be OK," coach Mike Sherman said Monday. "But I am not sure 100 percent." The 36-year-old three-time MVP, who has started an NFL-record 217 consecutive games, was unavailable Monday. The Packers (2-10) play Detroit at Lambeau Field on Sunday. Meanwhile, tight end Bubba Franks underwent an MRI exam Monday after leaving Sunday's game with an injury to his neck and back. A week ago, Franks was forced out the game against the Eagles and spent a night in a Philadelphia hospital.
Vikings: Punter Chris Kluwe will miss Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams with an injured right knee. Kluwe was carted off the field in the third quarter of the Vikings' 21-16 victory over the Detroit Lions after spraining his left ankle when Lions' safety Vernon Fox ran into him while trying to block a punt. But coach Mike Tice said Monday that Kluwe injured the knee on his kicking leg in the second quarter, and that would keep him out against the Rams. "We'll bring a couple of punters in and go down to the Metrodome, kick tomorrow and see how that goes and then make a decision on that," Tice said. Kluwe, a rookie, is averaging 45.3 yards per punt with 11 inside the 20-yard line. Tice said the Vikings will talk to veteran Darren Bennett, who came to training camp this season but was cut after an inconsistent preseason, and a few others and will sign a replacement early in the week.
