Man charged in accidental shooting

David E. Young, 19, was being held after his 7-month-old brother was killed.
WARREN -- A young man charged in an accidental but fatal shooting of his baby brother is being held on a $100,000 surety bond.
David E. Young, 19, of 421 School St. N.W., remained in Trumbull County Jail after his initial court appearance Monday. He is charged with involuntary manslaughter, a first-degree felony, and unlawful possession of a dangerous ordnance, a fifth-degree felony, after the 2:30 a.m. Saturday incident.
A blast from a shotgun Young was handling penetrated a wall and hit the baby, Adam Gunter, 7 months, of the same address, in the abdomen as he slept in his crib, police said. The baby was taken by his parents to Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital, then moved to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:02 a.m. Saturday.
Young appeared by video from the jail during the initial court appearance, in which Municipal Judge Thomas P. Gysegem entered automatic innocent pleas for him and set the $100,000 surety bond, which was recommended by Traci Rose, assistant city prosecutor.
Possible prison time
The involuntary manslaughter charge carries a penalty of three to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $20,000. Unlawful possession of a dangerous ordnance carries a six- to 12-month jail term and up to a $2,500 fine.
Young told the judge he cannot afford a lawyer, and the judge said an attorney from the public defender's office would interview him in jail.
Judge Gysegem also said Young owes the court $300, which is past due on traffic matters from last year and this year as well as a criminal case earlier this year.
Detective Michael Krafcik said Young went to Trumbull Memorial after the incident and said he was responsible for the shooting. Police then took him to the station and arrested him. Police had checked "yes" in a box labeled "alcohol influence" in the arrest section of the report.
