Man charged after 14 lawns are damaged

STRUTHERS -- Police have charged a city man with driving through 14 lawns on four streets.
Robert P. Sass, 19, of Omar Street, pleaded innocent Monday at his arraignment in municipal court to five misdemeanor charges, including leaving the scene of an accident. Police say he drove through portions of 14 lawns on Henry and Hopewell drives, Iroquois Street and Poland Avenue over the weekend.
The incidents occurred between 8 p.m. Friday and 6:45 a.m. Saturday, damaging lawns, flower beds, Christmas decorations and another car, according to police reports.
Sass, who is being held in Mahoning County Jail on $5,000 bond, also is charged with criminal damaging and endangering, criminal trespass, obstructing official business and disorderly conduct while intoxicated. His trial is scheduled for Monday.
A resident at 34 Hopewell was the first to call police about damage to his yard. A car was damaged at 38 Hopewell. Police followed the tire tracks through several properties to 571 Audrey Lane, where they found a damaged car in the driveway the same color of blue as was left smeared on the damaged car on Hopewell.
Sass came out of the house when officers were preparing to have the car towed. Police said Sass, who at first said the car had not been driven that night, appeared to be intoxicated and had to be restrained before he was taken to Struthers City Jail.
