STRUTHERS -- Christmas at Mauthe Park, 156 Smithfield Ave., is at 1 p.m. Saturday. City employees donate their time for the event, which includes a reading of "The Night Before Christmas" by Mayor Daniel Mamula, and carol singing with the Struthers High School Singers. Santa Claus will arrive on a firetruck, and every child will receive a treat.
Raising funds for library
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- The fund-raising committee for the new library being built here will hold bake sales at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Dec. 15 at the Springfield Intermediate School Auditorium before children's concerts.
Proceeds for the sales will go toward the new branch library, which is being built at 10418 Main St. The branch will replace the current branch in town hall. The committee has raised almost $12,000, library officials said.

Curbside leaf pickup
McDonald -- Friday is the last day leaves will be picked up at the curb with the leaf vacuum machine. After that, leaves must be bagged, then placed along the curb for pick up by the street department. Call (330) 530-5472 to inform the village that leaves have been placed at the curb.
Truck hits police officer
EAST PALESTINE -- City Police Sergeant Bernard "Cork" Doran was in satisfactory condition Sunday at St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, with injuries suffered when he was hit by a small pickup truck. Doran was directing traffic during the city's annual Christmas parade Saturday when a driver had a diabetic episode, causing him to lose consciousness. His car hit Doran, who suffered a broken hip, police said.
Holiday health program
HOWLAND -- Howland SCOPE Center, 8273 High St., will hold a program on health with holiday food and exercise from noon to 1:30 p.m. Dec. 15. There will be free blood-pressure screenings, winter skin care tips and food preparation and tasting.
Post office adds hours
CANFIELD -- Canfield Post Office will extend its retail hours from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday and Dec. 17. Postmaster Paul Ruchtie said the extra hour on these two Saturdays will make it more convenient for customers to mail Christmas cards and packages. He also reminds customers to mail as early as possible to ensure timely arrival of gifts.
Applications for grants
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County Commissioners' Reuse and Recycling Division, The Green Team, will accept applications for 2006 Recycling Initiatives Competitive Funding Grants through Jan. 31. Grants from $500 to $5,000 are available to local governments, schools and nonprofit organizations.
