PREP BASKETBALL Toth paces Poland girls past So. Range, 48-43
She had a career-high 27 points as the Bulldogs won for the first time.
POLAND -- Senior point guard Jessica Toth, rebounding from a year off after an ACL tear, had a career-high 27 points as Poland High defeated South Range, 48-43, Saturday.
It was Poland's first win and South Range's first loss in three games for each.
Toth made 7-of-10 free throws to help the Bulldogs finish 13-of-23 at the line.
"She finally got everything clicking," coach Jamie Dunn said of Toth's breakthrough game.
Toth scored 16 points in Poland's season-opening loss to Fitch followed by 15 points in a loss to East Liverpool.
After falling behind 16-9, Poland outscored South Range, 20-4, in the second quarter, primarily by capitalizing on turnovers via press and converting them into transition points.
The Raiders pulled within four in the last few minutes of the game, but Poland called a timeout and regrouped to bump its lead up to eight points.
Cindy Shuler had 18 points and Autumn Carter 10 for South Range, which was two of five at the foul line.
Leetonia 55,Lordstown 40
LEETONIA -- Katie Krunick scored 11 points, Valerie Goerig packaged together 10 points with five assists and Megan McCallister scored 10 points in a balanced attack for the Bears (2-0).
Lordstown jumped out to a 14-3 lead after one quarter and was in control 23-16 at the break.
Leetonia led just 28-26 after the third quarter before scoring 27 points in the last eight minutes.
Brianna Blodgett scored 19 points for Lordstown.
Geneva 63,Harding 41
GENEVA -- Junior Rakia Henderson had nine points for Harding, but the Raiders dropped their second straight game.
Geneva held a 17-12 lead after one quarter before Harding was outscored in the second period, 16-1.
Harding's season-opening loss was to Canfield.
Boys
WARREN -- Roddy Fuller's 15 points led a horde of players in double figures as Warren Harding defeated Chaney, 96-45, in the opener for both teams.
Fuller, a 6-4 1/2 senior swingman, led the bigger, faster and more efficient Raiders, who took a 22-9 lead after eight minutes and increased their margin to 52-17 by halftime.
Harding had a 51-27 advantage on the boards with Pat White grabbing 14 and Odell Eargle getting a dozen.
Each team had 16 turnovers, but the Raiders made 40 of 66 field goals to help their cause.
Six-two senior forward Dominique Peake had team-high 17 points for Chaney.
Sharpsville 52,Conneaut Valley 39
SHARPSVILLE, Pa. -- Sharpsville broke open a close game in the final quarter to pull past Conneaut Valley for its second straight win.
R.J. Golub had 13 points and 10 rebounds while Aaron Biro added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Blue Devils.
Conneaut Valley (0-1) was led by Josh Varee with 21 points.
