SHARON, Pa. -- The Shenango Valley Community Library is sponsoring a Mitten and Hat Tree through Dec. 15. The public is asked to bring new children's gloves, mittens or hats to the library, 11 N. Sharpsville Ave., and the donations will be distributed to needy children through the Prince of Peace Center in Farrell. Children from the Buhl Nursery School and their teacher, Carol Davis, decorated the tree in the library, symbolizing the charity.
Explaining Medicare
LISBON -- A representative from Social Security will explain Medicare Part A and B and Medicare Part D, a financial assistance program for prescriptions, at the Columbiana Public Library from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Registration is required by calling (330) 482-5509.
Christmas festival set
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A Christmas Festival is planned for noon to 4 p.m. next Sunday at the Shenango Volunteer Fire Hall, East Washington Street. The event includes a pasta dinner, a coloring contest for children, a visit from Santa Claus, games and a silent auction. Tickets are $5 before the event and $6 at the door; call the American Red Cross office at (724) 652-7724. The event is sponsored by the Shenango Volunteer Fire Co. and merchants who have donated auction items.
Newton Falls parade
NEWTON FALLS -- The Newton Falls Area Commerce Association will be sponsoring its first "Home 44444 the Holidays" parade next Sunday. Registration will begin at noon in front of First Church of God on Broad Street. The parade will begin promptly at 2 p.m. behind Rite Aid and follow Broad Street, passing the judges stand at Center Street, turning right on River Street, turning right on Quarry and ending at the community center.
Afterward, everyone is invited to join Santa to warm up with coffee, hot chocolate and cookies. On stage there will be live performances until 4:15 p.m. featuring local talent. Following, the winners will be announced and prizes handed out. Lastly, Santa will explain an exciting venture for children.
Crime-prevention event
WARREN -- The National Rifle Association will conduct a crime prevention seminar at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the YWCA of Warren, 375 N. Park Ave. The session, "Refuse to Be a Victim," is open only to women and will last three to four hours.
Cost is $25 ($20 for YWCA members). Preregistration is required and may be done by calling the YWCA at (330) 373-1010. The seminar teaches safety strategies for avoiding dangerous situations and preventing confrontations. It covers personal security as well as home, auto, phone, technological and travel security. Firearm instruction is not included.
