High school season begins on Monday
The high school bowling season starts Monday, less one team from last season.
Without Rayen -- a team which lost its coach -- the Mahoning Valley High School Bowling Conference will have 18 schools for the 2005-06 season.
"We have schools that want to join," conference coordinator Fran Miller said. "Next season, there's a good chance our conference will change," she said of its makeup and alignment.
This will be Miller's second year as coordinator of the conference that begins its sixth season.
Miller said that Ohio has met the criteria (150 school-sponsored teams) to be sanctioned by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
"Right now, we're at 150 school-sponsored teams. It has to stay at 150 or higher [for a year] to become a state-sanctioned sport just like football and basketball."
Miller is also the Chaney girls coach in the MVHSBC.
"We're kind of rebuilding," said Miller, who lost five seniors from last year's squad: Sarah Garcia, Kristen Bielik, Laura Furgas, Tricia D'Adignon and Rachel Miller.
Rachel Miller, Fran's older daughter, is on the Youngstown State University bowling team.
Tough to overcome
"Losing them will be tough to overcome," Fran Miller said of her varsity team that was a district champion in 2004-05.
"The Fitch girls lost Andrea Lucente to graduation, so they need to have some girls pick up the slack."
She said that Struthers' girls team lost only one senior from a state-qualifying squad.
"They should still have a strong team," Miller said of the Wildcats.
Chaney's boys, coached by John Mshar, have a good chance at finishing first in its White Division and then shooting for a repeat appearance in the district where the Cowboys were runner-up in 2004-2005. Chaney has its same six bowlers back.
Fitch's boys team, again, is expected to be dominating.
Some area high school bowlers participated in a season-opening kickoff tournament in Columbus recently.
Schools in action at the Columbus Square Bowling Palace were the Chaney girls and Canfield boys and Fitch's boys and girls.
Chaney senior Monica Miller placed first with 633, while Fitch junior Katie Fekety placed fourth with 586. Both made the all-tournament team.
The Fitch girls placed 12th in the event in which 64 teams and 402 bowlers participated.
