HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY James A. Roemer



Born: Dec. 5, 1905, in Youngstown, and grew up in Canton.
Parents: Henry A. and May Sahli Roemer.
Married: His high school sweetheart, Helen Frances James, in 1929. She died in 1995 after 66 years of marriage.
Children: Two sons, William F. Roemer of Sewickley and James Quentin Roemer of Findlay.
Grandchildren: Six.
Great-grandchildren: Four.
Schooling: Graduated from Canton McKinley High School in 1923 and majored in economics and lettered in baseball at Oberlin College, where he graduated in 1927.
Employment: Locally, held positions at Youngstown Pressed Steel; Niles Rolling Mill and Mallory Sharon Titanium, both in Niles; Sharon Steel Corp., Sharon, Pa., eventually becoming president then chairman; as president of Shenango Metalcraft Corp., Sharon; and as president of Roemer Industries Inc., Sharon. He also held many directorships, including Niles Rolling Mill; Sharon Steel; Mallory Sharon Titanium; Reactive Metals Inc., Niles; Industrial Information Institute Inc., Youngstown; Trumbull County Manufacturing Association, Warren; Chamber of Commerce in Niles, Sharon and Warren; Union Savings and Trust, Warren; Dollar Savings Bank, Niles; St. Joseph Riverside Hospital, Warren; Sharon General Hospital; Shenango Metalcraft; Roemer Industries; and Western Reserve Council Boy Scouts of America.
Affiliations: Former trustee for Blue Cross of Eastern Ohio and the Butler Institute of American Art; a 32nd degree Mason; a Shriner; former vestry member, junior warden and member of the foundation at Christ Episcopal Church, Warren; 70-year honorary member of Trumbull Country Club in Warren; 50-year honorary member of the Buckeye Club, Warren; and member of Youngstown Country Club and Congress Lake Country Club in Hartville.
Other achievements: He was featured in a Time magazine article after being awarded a patent on a method of rolling titanium sheet metal in 1953.
Hobbies: He and his wife traveled extensively around the world, and at the age of 95 he stepped onto the continent of Antarctica. He also enjoyed art, golf and hunting.
Celebration: Was honored Nov. 26 during a party with his family at Shepherd of the Valley Retirement Home in Warren.
