At least 3 seek prosecutor post

YOUNGSTOWN -- At least three attorneys are seeking to be appointed city prosecutor, including the current officeholder, by Mayor-elect Jay Williams.
Anthony J. Farris, the city's chief assistant prosecutor for about five years, said he plans to apply for the job next week.
Farris has worked for the city prosecutor's office for eight years and unsuccessfully ran for city municipal court judge in the 2001 Democratic primary.
Also interested in the post is Jay Macejko, who's served as a Mahoning County assistant prosecutor for the past seven years.
Macejko worked for less than a year in the city prosecutor's office before going to the county.
If Macejko is appointed, he would have 120 days to move to Youngstown, a requirement of Williams' for members of his Cabinet.
Prosecutor Dionne Almasy, who's held that job for eight years, couldn't be reached to comment Friday.
But Macejko, Farris and Dana Guarnieri, a senior assistant law director who prosecutes cases for the city, said Almasy is interested in retaining her job when Williams takes office Jan. 6.
Guarnieri said she's not applying for the prosecutor position and wants to keep her current post.
Almasy earns $62,879.44 annually.
Williams is offering an annual salary for the city prosecutor's job ranging from $56,050 to $62,879.44.
Cabinet selection
Williams is establishing a nine- to 13-member transition team -- whose members remain secret -- to evaluate the qualifications of applicants for seven key positions, including prosecutor, in the city administration. Williams said he'll make the final decisions.
The other six positions are deputy director of public works, finance director, fire chief, police chief, law director and water commissioner.
The deadline to apply for the jobs is 4 p.m. Dec. 12.
