Woman convicted of aiding in slaying of former lover is sent to state prison

AKRON (AP) -- A woman convicted of aiding in the drive-by shooting death of a former lover by the third member of a love triangle has gone to prison after a judge refused her request to remain free while she appeals.
Summit County Common Pleas Judge Patricia Cosgrove on Monday convicted Cynthia George, 51, in a nonjury trial. The judge sentenced her to a life term with parole eligibility after 20 years on her conviction for complicity in the slaying and three years for a gun specification.
She insists she is innocent. In a six-page motion filed Tuesday, the attorneys said George, free on a $200,000 bond before the trial, would not flee while the appeal is pending.
But Cosgrove rejected the motion Wednesday.
On Wednesday, George was transferred from the Summit County Jail to the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville.
John Zaffino, 39, is serving a life sentence in the 2001 slaying of Jeff Zack, 44, a Stow businessman shot at a gasoline pump by a motorcyclist.
George is the wife of Ed George, owner of the Tangier, a popular Middle Eastern-theme restaurant in downtown Akron.
