ON THE SIDE. . .
This and that from the world of Valley politics.
EYE ON CONGRESS: The 13th Congressional District seat is available with U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown, an Avon Democrat, running next year for the U.S. Senate. The heavily Democratic district includes parts of Summit, Cuyahoga and Lorain counties.
Democrats interested in replacing Brown include former U.S. Rep. Thomas C. Sawyer of Akron, a 16-year congressman. You may remember Sawyer as the incumbent who U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles soundly defeated in the 2002 Democratic primary for the 17th Congressional District seat.
Another interested candidate is Capri Cafaro, a member of one of the Mahoning Valley's richest families. Cafaro spent over $2 million of her own money on a failed bid to win the 14th Congressional District seat last year, and is a declared candidate for that seat for the 2006 race.
Cafaro didn't live in the 14th District until a few months before the general election. She doesn't live in the 13th District. On federal campaign reports, she lists a Hubbard address. When she contributed money to Robert Hagan's failed Youngstown mayoral campaign, her hometown on that report is New York City.
While Sawyer also doesn't live in the 13th District, he's only a few miles from it. Whether Cafaro lives in the Valley or the Big Apple, either is more than a few miles from the 13th District.
