Eight people sentenced in gambling convictions

AUSTINTOWN -- Eight defendants in an illegal gambling trial were found guilty of various charges in county court here. One defendant was found not guilty.
The defendants were on trial in connection with a raid in March at Theodore's Banquet Center on Niles-Canfield Road.
Police and agents from the Ohio Department of Public Safety's liquor enforcement division took nearly $12,000 in cash, gaming tables and other equipment in an early morning raid March 12. A suspected illegal barbut game was listed on the warrant as the reason for the search.
Judge's decisions
The defendants went on trial Oct. 20 before Judge David D'Apolito, and he issued his verdicts Monday.
UJackie Bayus, 35, South Canfield Road, a bartender at Theodore's, was found innocent of a charge of complicity to gambling.
UJoe Diorio, 63, McCartney Road, Lowellville, was found innocent of a gambling charge and guilty of possession of criminal tools. He was fined $250 plus court costs and sentenced to 30 days' house arrest and 12 months' probation.
UVincent Orban Jr., 72, Barberton, was found guilty of gambling and possession of criminal tools. He was fined $500 plus court costs and sentenced to 30 days' house arrest and 12 months' probation.
UDavid Dodds, 38, North Canton, was found guilty of gambling and possession of criminal tools. He was fined $500 plus court costs and sentenced to 30 days' house arrest and 12 months' probation.
UJoseph A. Hanna, 62, Canterbury Lane, Boardman, was found guilty of gambling and possession of criminal tools. He was fined $500 plus court costs and sentenced to 30 days' house arrest and 12 months' probation.
UVictor Maillis, 61, Flagler Lane, Youngstown, who police said rented the hall, was found guilty of gambling, operating a gambling house and possession of criminal tools. A public gaming charge was dismissed. He was fined $750 plus court costs and sentenced to 60 days' house arrest and 12 months' probation.
UTheodore Terlesky, 62, Norquest Boulevard, the owner of the business, was found guilty of gambling, operating a gambling house and possession of criminal tools. A public gaming charge was dismissed. He was fined $750 plus court costs and sentenced to 60 days' house arrest and 12 months' probation.
UJohn E. Hazimihalis, 62, Struthers Liberty Road, Youngstown, was found guilty of gambling and possession of criminal tools. He was fined $500 plus court costs and sentenced to 30 days' house arrest and 12 months' probation.
UPeter E. Ginnis, 54, Regent Street, Campbell, was found guilty of gambling and possession of criminal tools. He was fined $500 plus court costs and sentenced to 30 days' house arrest and 12 months' probation.
