Eagles get first win in new gym
YOUNGSTOWN -- Senior Rachel Coristin and sophomore Kara Cooper had 14 points apiece for Youngstown Christian, as the Eagles defeated Bloomfield High, 62-14, in the first game at the school's new 500-seat gymnasium.
Senior Danielle Pecchia had 10 steals and sophomore Vicki Bankhead nine rebounds for the Eagles (1-1), who lost their season opener at Mathews, 42-35.
Boardman 71,Hubbard 33
HUBBARD -- April Melquist had 22 points and Courtney Schiffauer added 16 for Boardman.
The Spartans took a 21-8 first-quarter lead and made 26 goals and 15-of-23 free throws.
Sheila Drummond and Kodi Brenner had nine points apiece for Hubbard, which was playing its opener. The Eagles had 11 goals and sank 10 of 16 foul shots.
Maplewood 52,Lakeview 51
CORTLAND -- Freshman guard Michelle Sloan made the first of a one-and-one free throw attempt with 0.6 seconds remaining to snap the 51-51 tie.
The foul shot was Sloan's only point of the game.
Sophomore guard Leah Dean poured in 22 points for Maplewood (2-0) which had a 42-24 rebounding advantage. Dean scored 14 of her points in the first half.
Senior forward Lindsay Whetzel had 16 points and Lauren McCumber had seven rebounds for Lakeview.
Mineral Ridge 48,Chaney 35
MINERAL RIDGE -- Senior forward Abbey Kiger had 16 points and Julie Buckner added 10 points for Mineral Ridge, which took a 12-6 lead after one quarter and never trailed.
Rachael Siler had 10 rebounds for the winners, while Kiger tacked on nine. Kiger had 12 points in Ridge's previous game.
Brittainny Cobb had 11 points and Clenisha Pless added 10 for Chaney.
Liberty 57,Badger 37
KINSMAN -- Liberty started strong and played good defense en route to a 20-point win for Liberty (2-0).
Junior guard Michelle Dykes had a game-high 19 points and junior center Katarina Neskovich tacked on 15. Neskovich also had 14 rebounds.
Rachel Doran had 13 points for Badger (0-3).
Howland 60,Girard 25
GIRARD -- Alexa Williams tossed in 21 points as Howland rolled easily past Girard.
The Tigers jumped out to a 36-8 halftime lead and coasted to the win.
Ellie Shields added 15 points and Melissa Airhart had 11 for the Tigers.
Girard (0-3) was led by Lauren Chiec with seven points.
Canton McKinley 55,Canfield 39
CANFIELD -- Kate Popovec's 17 points paced Canfield (1-1), which stayed close until getting outscored in the final quarter, 18-5.
Porsche Poole scored 22 points for the Bulldogs (1-1).
Lisbon 50,Lowellville 47
LISBON -- Erica Sims scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as Lisbon won its second straight game beating Lowellville.
Emily Smith added 12 points for the winners, while Ali Grapevine and Kristen Pallozzi each had 13 points for the Rockets (0-1).
Springfield 42,Mooney 37
YOUNGSTOWN -- Joanna Dick scored 13 points and Samantha Cavalier 12 to lead Springfield (1-1), while Whitney Yaeger collared eight rebounds.
Dayna Daltorio had 15 points to pace Cardinal Mooney (0-1), while Sarah Pelini grabbed six rebounds.
Champion 69,Bristol 41
CHAMPION -- Elizabeth Ghindia scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Champion (1-1), while Erika Stevens contributed 12 points.
Andrea Molinatto had 12 points to spark Bristol (0-2).
