POLAND -- Township trustees will ask for grants from the Ohio Public Works Commission for two projects aimed at alleviating flooding woes.
At a special meeting Wednesday, trustees unanimously voted to allocate $25,000 in township money as a match for a requested Issue 2 grant of about $80,000.
The money will be used for phase two of the Beechwood Stormwater Management Project.
The project is adding storm sewers to a part of the township where there aren't any.
The first phase, set to be completed soon, was a joint project between the township and Struthers. Both communities kicked in $36,580 with the remainder of the roughly $238,000 cost coming from state Issue 2 funds.
What was done
The first phase included replacement and upgrading of storm sewers and catch basins, installation of new culverts and creation of storm-water detention ponds on the border between the township and Struthers.
The work is being done in the area of state Route 616, Beechwood and Renwick drives, and Lyon Boulevard.
A third phase of the project also is likely, said James Scharville, township administrator.
For the other project, Canterbury Creek, trustees voted to allocate $35,000 which will provide a match for the requested $350,000 Issue 2 grant.
Robert Lidle Jr., trustee chairman, said the township sought Issue 2 funding for the project last year but got turned down.
That project is to add a box culvert, designed to curb flooding, at Canterbury Creek.
Between 15 and 20 homes in the 90-unit development, which was built about 12 years ago, suffered flooding during the summers of 2003 and 2004.
