Concrete slabs stolen
YOUNGSTOWN -- Sidewalks are being stolen from the North Side, a city engineer reported to police. Based on an anonymous tip, the city worker checked North and Lincoln avenues and Grant and Arlington street. He then checked other areas Monday and discovered concrete sidewalk slabs missing from the corners of Lincoln and Belmont avenues, North and Rayen avenues, Covington Street near Madison Avenue, Arlington and North, Ford and Grant and Scott Street near Ford. The anonymous caller identified two people and their vehicle and said they are selling the sidewalks, reports show.
Car crashes into house
YOUNGSTOWN -- Kyle Campbell, driving with an expired temporary permit, traveled through two yards on Roy Street before the car slammed into a vacant house in the 2600 block with such force that the impact knocked out some floor joists, police said. The car came to a stop in the center of the house after hitting the brick chimney, police said. Campbell, 19, of North Maryland Avenue, told police that a tire blew. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for leg surgery around 11 p.m. Monday. He faces charges of driving under suspension, reckless operation and failure to control.
City receives salary aid
WARREN -- The city will get $100,000 this fiscal year and $200,000 next fiscal year from the state law enforcement and fire marshal's fund for essential public safety services, said state Rep. Randy Law of Warren, R-64th. State fiscal years begin July 1. City officials said the money will be used to pay for police and fire department salaries and benefits.
Impersonation charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Charges of impersonating a police officer and possession of a firearm in a liquor establishment against Richard J. Dzuray have been bound over to a Mahoning County grand jury from municipal court. Police arrested Dzuray, 46, of East Garfield Road, Petersburg, Aug. 20 in a constable uniform at Judge Roy Bean's bar on Oak Street. Officials have said that Dzuray is not licensed as a security guard, and constables do not have authority in the city.
Identity theft problem
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 48-year-old East Warren Avenue woman who tried to establish an account with Ohio Edison was told by the electric company that she has an outstanding bill of $7,000 from addresses on Thornton and Pasadena avenues. The woman, a reported victim of identity theft, told police she has never had an account with OE.
Sexual predator
BAZETTA -- Lakeview schools notified parents this week that a sexual predator has moved into the district. The Trumbull County Sheriff's Office has identified him as Charles Gorham, 37, of Larry Lane. Russ Molinatto, sheriff's assistant warden, said Gorham was convicted June 6, 2001, in Virginia of taking indecent liberties with a minor. Molinatto said Gorham lived in Liberty and then moved to McDonald, across the street from a school. The sheriff's office initiated a civil action against him to move, but he relocated here Aug. 1. Registered sexual predators can be identified through www.sheriff.co.trumbull.oh.us.
Siren test planned
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- The Hermitage Fire Department will conduct its monthly weather warning sirens test at 10 a.m. Thursday. Communities affected include Clark, Farrell, Sharpsville, West Middlesex and Wheatland. Residents are asked to disregard the sirens during the test.
Fireworks argument
AUSTINTOWN -- Joseph Cercone, 20, of 5318 N. Beacon Drive was to be in area court here today to face burglary and assault charges stemming from an argument over fireworks. Police said Cercone forced his way into the home of another Beacon Drive man and assaulted him, contending the victim had run over fireworks Cercone was about to set off in the street July 4. The victim sought no medical treatment. Boardman police arrested Cercone on a warrant at a Boardman restaurant Monday evening.
Shots reported in Girard
GIRARD -- Two city residents, in a police report made available Tuesday, told police they were traveling on South State Street at 10:15 p.m. Saturday when someone in a car behind them fired one shot from a shotgun into the rear of their car. No one was injured.
