Arrested in shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police arrested Lamar Bailey, 17, Monday afternoon on a murder warrant and took him to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center, said Lt. Robin Lees. Bailey, of Philadelphia Avenue, is accused in last week's shooting death of 15-year-old Shuan Williams, Lees said. Members of the Street Crimes Unit and U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force found Bailey on Rush Boulevard on the city's South Side, Lees said. Williams was shot in the head as he sat on his Glenwood Avenue porch around 9:15 p.m. last Wednesday. His 20-year-old brother was injured during the gunfire. Police have said a long-standing feud led to the shooting.
Road construction
CANFIELD -- The Mahoning County Engineer's office is asking that people avoid a road construction site at Shields and Tippecanoe roads in Boardman and Canfield on their way to or from the Canfield Fair, which begins Wednesday. The area is open to traffic, the engineer's office said, but alternate routes would be better.
Vice citations
YOUNGSTOWN -- Members of the Vice Squad issued three citations over the weekend at The Bad Apple, a bar on West Federal Street. Andrea Fabek, 19, and Elizabeth M. Hacon, 18, both of Austintown, were each charged with underage possession of alcohol. They pleaded innocent at arraignment Monday in municipal court and will be back in court Oct. 4 for a pretrial. Darius Adams, 33, of Youngstown was charged with possession of a dangerous drug, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana. He, too, pleaded innocent at arraignment and will be back in court Oct. 5 for a pretrial.
Ohio EPA speaker
GIRARD -- Andrew Kocher of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency will speak at tonight's Girard United Against Ruinous Dumping's town hall meeting. The meeting will be at the Girard City Gym at 7:30 p.m. Kocher will give a PowerPoint presentation on the progress of the cleanup of the Ohio Leatherworks. After the presentation, he will have a question-and-answer session. Kocher, the site coordinator for the northeastern district of the Ohio EPA, has been responsible for investigating and monitoring the cleanup of the Leatherworks located on U.S. Route 422 here. Updates will also be given concerning GUARD's progress against efforts by Total Waste Logistics to establish a construction and demolition debris landfill behind the Creekside Golf Dome and adjacent to the Mahoning River.
House explosion
BOARDMAN -- A Clifton Drive woman injured in a house fire Saturday morning was in critical condition Monday in the burn unit of Akron Children's Hospital. A resident on his way to work shortly before 7 a.m. Saturday heard an explosion and found Sharon A. Padilla, 43, of 120 Clifton, in the bed of a pickup truck parked in the driveway, a police report said. The investigation has been turned over to the Ohio State fire marshal. Chuck Hanni, a fire marshal investigator, said some type of explosion occurred. The force of the blast pushed out a wall, and a side door from the house was blown off and lying in the driveway, the report said.
OVI checkpoint
GREENFORD -- The Operating a Vehicle Impaired Task Force checked 636 vehicles during a checkpoint Saturday at state Route 165 and Lisbon Road. One driver was charged with drunken driving and one was arrested on allegations of having suspected drug paraphernalia and a concealed weapon in the car. Thirty-four drivers were cited for seat-belt violations and one was cited for failure to display a vehicle registration. Three people received minor misdemeanor citations for having open containers of alcohol.
New citizens take oath
YOUNGSTOWN -- Three people recently took the oath of allegiance to the United States as new citizens at naturalization ceremonies in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. The new citizens, their original countries and their local homes are: Usman Arshad Khan, Pakistan, Youngstown; Radha Ramana Podugu, India, Canton; and Pamela Maree Woodward, United Kingdom, Campbell.
