AKRON -- Youngstown State dropped its season opener to Akron Saturday 3-0.
The Penguins lost 30-25, 30-27, 30-23.
YSU was led by Cari Leslie, who finished with 13 kills, 18 digs and 14 points, while Amanda Cindric added 13 digs.
Akron (1-0) had 16 points, 16 kills and 10 digs from Jennifer Stewart, while Emily Kocinski added 15 points, 14 kills and 16 digs.
The Penguins play two matches today, against Robert Morris at 1 p.m. and Canisius at 3:30, at Rhodes Arena.

*HOUSTON -- Middleweight Kelly Pavlik remains unbeaten, stopping Vince Harris at 1:57 of the second round of their bout Friday night at the D & amp;I Colonial Ballroom.
Pavlik, 26-0 with 23 knockouts, looked stiff in the early going against Harris (12-18-2), who was throwing shots from every angle.
In the first minute of the fight, Harris caught Pavlik with a right high on the forehead, but then the taller Pavlik went to work, with straight rights, left hooks and body shots. A left hook to the jaw sent Harris down for an eight count.
Within the first 25 seconds of the second round a straight right from Pavlik opened a cut over Harris' left eye.
Sensing the kill, Pavlik continued to score with straight rights and a series of right uppercuts. Then a straight right decked Harris and with blood streaming down from his eye he took the 10 count.
& quot;It wasn't exactly an easy fight," said Pavlik. "[Harris] came out throwing shots and it took me a few seconds to get myself going, but I did what I had to do by staying busy.
"Once I settled in with some good body shots, I knew the fight was mine. What helped me a lot tonight was that I was able to work a lot of solid right uppercuts off of my straight rights. & quot;
Next for Pavlik is an Oct. 7 Las Vegas date in a main event 12-rounder with Fulgencio Zuniga (17-1-1, 16 KOs) from Barranquila, Colombia for the vacant NABF middleweight championship.
*CLEVELAND -- Warren cruiserweight Zack Page went to 9-2 with a unanimous six-round decision over a slugging Anthony Williams at the Wolstein Center Friday night.
It was the eighth consecutive win for Page, who staggered Williams (5-6-1) with straight rights in the second, fourth and sixth rounds, but couldn't put him away.
The main event four-rounder had Cleveland's Juan McPherson, a two time amateur national champion, make his pro debut with a unanimous decision over Wilmer Torres of Detroit.
Lisa Battle, in her pro debut stopped Warren's Julianne Bergen, making her pro debut, in the first round.
*NORMAN, Okla. -- Local boxer Ted Muller lost a 10-round decision to Alan Green in a professional boxing match Friday at the Thunderbird Casino.
Muller fell to 16-4 as a super middleweight while Green is 17-0.
Mar Hill bowling
CANFIELD -- Paula Pecorelli and Joe Cupon took first place with 1,571 pins in the 33rd Mar-Hill Doubles Bowling Tournament held at Amron Lanes.
Nancy Hays and Ray Bakes finished second with 1,525. Gloria Smith and Robert Rosenberg were third with 1,521.
Campbell joins MUC
ALLIANCE -- Charles Campbell, former West Branch High girls basketball coach, was named an assistant women's coach at Mount Union.
Campbell coached West Branch for 17 years, winning the Division II state championship in 2004.
He also will serve as coach of the women's golf team.
Campbell compiled a 301-87 record as West Branch girls basketball coach. His teams won 10 Northeastern Buckeye Conference titles.
Campbell was named NBC Coach of the Year 10 times and Ohio Coach of the Year twice in 1998 and 2004.
He has 30 years of coaching experience on the high school level.
Mount Union also has named two other new coaches.
Joe Gilhousen, former baseball coach at Oakwood High and GlenOak High, has been named an assistant baseball coach.
Erica Tallo, former Westminster College basketball standout, has been selected as an assistant women's basketball coach.
Mercer washed out
MERCER, Pa. -- For the ninth time this season, setting a modern day record, Mother Nature took the checkered flag at Mercer Raceway Park Saturday night.
Showers and drizzle throughout the late morning and early afternoon forced the cancellation.

Flower Alley winsTravers Stakes
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Flower Alley caught favored Bellamy Road at the top of the stretch and sprinted to a decisive 21/2-length win in the $1 million Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday.
Flower Alley, trained by Todd Pletcher and owned by Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk, became the sixth horse to follow a win in the Jim Dandy with a victory in the Grade I Travers, the oldest stakes race for 3-year-olds in the country.
Pletcher, who has been the top trainer at Saratoga four times, had failed to win the track's biggest race in four previous tries. It was the first Travers victory for jockey John Velazquez, who holds the record for wins during a meet at Saratoga with 65 in 2004.
Out of the gate, Bellamy Road, the Kentucky Derby favorite owned by George Steinbrenner and trained by Nick Zito, broke quickly and took the lead ahead of Flower Alley and Roman Ruler, trained by Bob Baffert.
Along the backstretch Bellamy Road, coming off a 112-day layoff after injuring a bone that runs from the knee to the ankle, extended his lead to 13/4 lengths.
As the horses entered the final turn, Flower Alley continued to press Bellamy Road and overtook the 2-1 favorite as the field turned for home.
Bellamy Road faded down the stretch as did Roman Ruler.
Davenport defeats Mauresmo for title
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Lindsay Davenport won the Pilot Pen championship Saturday, defeating Amelie Mauresmo of France 6-4, 6-4 after missing nearly two months with a back injury.
