Time sought for DNA test in wife-slaying case

WARREN -- DNA evidence is the latest obstacle holding up the case against David Jenkins of Warren, accused of killing his wife, Deana.
Jenkins' lawyer, J. Gerald Ingram, and assistant county Prosecutor Chris Becker agreed Monday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to set a pretrial hearing for Sept. 19.
Jenkins' trial date of Nov. 14 is still set, but Becker said that date is probably going to have to be pushed back.
The former Harding High School girls basketball coach has pleaded innocent to a murder charge. His wife was found strangled in the closet of the couple's home in May 2004.
He was indicted on the murder charge in April.
Judge Peter Kontos said the case "has been around a while," to which Ingram said the defense has "not been sitting on our hands doing nothing."
Ingram said he needed time to have his own DNA testing done on the Jenkins residence on Clearwater Street Northwest. Ingram said he's looked at the state's DNA testing results and found them to be "confusing."
Jenkins appeared briefly at the hearing but did not speak. He is free after posting $100,000 bond.
