PREP SOCCER Singleton's penalty kick gives Spartans 1-0 victory



Senior Erin Gilmour had two goals in Howland's 6-0 win over Fitch.
NILES -- Barrett Singleton made a penalty kick 25 minutes into the first half as the Boardman High boys soccer team blanked Niles 1-0 Monday in a season-opening soccer match.
Boardman had six shots on goal compared to 12 for Niles.
The Red Dragons' goalkeeper, Joe Harvey, had five saves. Matt Moore of Boardman also had five saves.
Warren JFK 3, Lordstown 1
LORDSTOWN -- Freshman Mike Parisa's goal in the second half snapped a 1-1 tied and put the Eagles ahead 2-1. Jarrod Cooper of JFK scored the final goal of the contest.
Seth Mansell gave the Red Devils a 1-0 lead, but JFK's Andy Stempak countered with a goal to tie the score just before intermission.
Brian Mulvey, Ed Hazboun and Matt Kokrak had an assist apiece for the Eagles.
Goaltender Brandon Wickline of Lordstown had 19 saves, while the Eagles' Kokrak had six.
Girls
HOWLAND -- Senior forward Erin Gilmour scored two goals while classmate Rachel Albani had one for Howland (1-0) in the Tigers' 6-0 win over Fitch.
Junior Kaylin Hovance and sophomores Allie Airhart and Deja Amato added a goal apiece, while goalie Melissa Airhart, a junior, had four saves.
Howland attempted 10 shots.
Cara Calai, the Falcons' goalie, had three saves.
Monday's opener was the only regular-season meeting between the teams in 2005. To open the season last year, Howland and Fitch tied, 2-2.
Canfield 5, West Branch 2
BELOIT -- Senior forward Liz Vernal scored the game's first goal to keep the Cardinals ahead throughout.
Vernal and Noelle Fox finished with two goals apiece while Audra Frimpong added another for Canfield, which had leads of 2-0, 2-1, 3-1 and 4-1.
Frimpong, Kaley Donovan and Hallie Feiser also assisted on goals. Ashley Hunter had three saves for the Cardinals.
Aimee Rice scored both of West Branch's goals.
Newton Falls 3, Maplewood 3
NEWTON FALLS -- Tori Spencer had two goals and Kristina Peterson and two assists as Maplewood rallied to tie Newton Falls in the first game of the season for both teams. Erika Pinko had an assist for the winners while goalie Leaha Dean had 15 saves.
For Newton Falls, Mary Jo Spletzer had two goals and Caitlin Martin had one goal. Casee Piquet and Bethany Runtas each contributed one assist. Goalie Jessica Moser had four saves.
