Mothers plan prayer walk
YOUNGSTOWN -- Organizers of the Aug. 6 mothers prayer walk on the city's East Side have planned a community prayer walk for 1 p.m. Aug 27 at Homestead Park, 829 E. Dewey Ave. Organizer Patti Billet said the walk is meant to show that city residents stand against violence and for children as the city's children return to school. The event will take place rain or shine.
Boy's death analyzed
NILES -- An autopsy was done Friday on a 16-year-old boy to determine the cause of death after he was found in a backyard swimming pool. Nicholas Henderson was pronounced dead at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital after being found in the pool at 2629 Niles-Vienna Road, where he lived with his father, James Spangler. Authorities said he had gone to live with his father about a month ago. The coroner's office said a ruling on the case is not expected until next week.
School supply giveaway
WARREN -- The Warren-Trumbull County branch of the National Association for the Advancement or Colored People will be holding a school supply giveaway from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Alliance Community Outreach Program building, 2051 Niles Road. Supplies will be given to each elementary and middle school-aged child in attendance on a first-come, first-served basis. The student must be present to receive supplies.
Police investigate fires
GIRARD -- Police are trying to determine who set fire to two trash cans Thursday in restrooms at Tod Park. Someone called the police and fire departments about smoke coming from one of the restrooms. Officers found one trash can in each the men's and women's restrooms burning. Reports say the trash cans were damaged and there was smoke damage to the restrooms.
Learn fire safety; have fun
LORDSTOWN -- Fire Apparatus and Safety Fun Day will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Lordstown Dairy Queen on Tod Avenue. The event is sponsored by the Dairy Queen and the Warren Fire Department.
Fire departments from Trumbull and Columbiana counties will have displays and competitions. There will also be a medical emergency helicopter. Proceeds go to Someplace Safe Inc., a nonprofit agency that provides shelter and crises intervention to victims of domestic violence and their children.
Extra officers on watch
YOUNGSTOWN -- Various police agencies from Mahoning County will have additional officers on patrol from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. today to enforce a zero-tolerance policy for drivers operating a vehicle impaired.
Officers from Austintown, Canfield, Goshen, Jackson, New Middletown, Poland and Youngstown will look for people under the influence and not wearing seat belts.
The OVI Task Force also will conduct a sobriety checkpoint Aug. 27 in Mahoning County. Nine local law enforcement departments will participate in the effort to spread the message, "You drink and drive. You lose."
Woman reports costly loss
YOUNGSTOWN -- A $4,000 fur coat and a Chinese fish bowl and gong were among the items a Wardle Avenue woman reported stolen.
Tangia Perry, 32, told police Thursday that someone had stolen $9,500 worth of furniture, appliances and coats from her home Wednesday night when she went out between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m.
A velvet couch, refrigerator, freezer, stove, four glass tables and several leather coats also were reported missing.
Friends told Perry they had seen a large gray pick-up truck in her driveway Wednesday night, according to reports.
Hurt teen names suspects
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 17-year-old Birch Street youth named two suspects for police after he was shot at least three times in the hand Thursday while the car he was in stopped for a stop sign at the intersection of Parkcliff and Firnley avenues.
The 17-year-old told police that he was riding in a car driven by an acquaintance known only as "Rockey." When the car stopped at the intersection, two males, about the same age as the victim, walked up to the car and began to shoot, according to reports.
The teenager told police the shooters are his acquaintances, but he didn't know why they would shoot at him.
Mayoral interview forum
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Community Mobilization Committee is sponsoring a mayoral candidates public interview forum at 6:30 p.m. Monday at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St. The candidates will answer questions from those who attend the event.
