Fire causes $110,000 in damage to house

BROOKFIELD -- Firefighters are attempting to determine the cause of a blaze Thursday afternoon that heavily damaged a home and killed seven kittens.
A township fire official said the blaze broke out at the ranch-style home of the Susan Messmer Gurney family at 665 Owsley St. shortly before 2:45 p.m.
The official said the fire started in the kitchen and spread to some other rooms. It extinguished itself because the windows were closed.
Estimated damage is $110,000. The house contained 10 kittens, and only three survived. The family was not home at the time, and neighbors called 911 after noticing smoke.
