LOCAL BOXING KO Drugs tournament starts Tuesday
YOUNGSTOWN -- The KO Drugs High School Boxing Tournament returns for its 18th year, starting Tuesday night at 7 at the St. Nicholas Byzantine Center at the Grove, on Shady Run Road.
The tournament, which will be conducted each Tuesday night in May, will have 36 bouts in the opening night. Nearly 150 boxers representing 37 schools have entered.
There are 17 under class (9th-10th graders) and 19 upper class (11th-12th graders) bouts scheduled for Tuesday night.
Four former KO Drugs champions are scheduled to fight -- cruiserweight Jose Mateo from Campbell Memorial, middleweight Brandon Holmes from Champion, light heavyweight Travis Smith from Salem and Jeremy Keffer of Boardman.
There is a medical crew and a physician at ringside with safety precautions such as three 45-second round, padded headgear and 18-ounce gloves.
Boardman has 10 fighters scheduled Tuesday night, while Austintown Fitch has seven and Canfield six. Fighters are coming from as far away as Akron and Greenville, Pa.
Ticket prices are $6 for students and $10 for adults. All fighters should report by 6 p.m.
