Girard bond levy panelplans benefit breakfast
GIRARD -- The Girard City School Bond Levy Committee will have a benefit pancake breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday in the high school cafeteria.
Tickets can be purchased at the door: adults, $4; senior citizens, $3; children 4-11, $2.
Information about the proposed new school will be available.
Band, orchestra concertfor Youngstown schools
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown City Schools will present the annual All Star Honors Band and Orchestra Concert featuring 500 pupils Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Youngstown State University's Beeghly Center.
Admission is $3, and tickets may be purchased at the door.
James Volenik, band director at Canfield Middle School, will serve as guest director.
The program will include performances by the elementary, middle school/junior high and high school honors bands and orchestras.
A new feature to this event is the City-Wide Jazz Ensemble, featuring both faculty and pupil musicians, under the direction of Douglas James.
Music Award of Excellence will be presented to the best musicians for each school. The Dorian Award for best musician in the city will be announced at the event.
The program is coordinated by Dr. Carol Baird, supervisor of Creative and Performing Arts.
New board member
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The New Castle Area School Board has appointed Phillip J. Macri to fill a seat on the school board recently vacated by the death of Larry Nord.
Macri will serve the remaining seven months of Nord's term, which is to expire Nov. 30.
Nord, who served as legislative chairman for the school board and was in the last year of his second four-year term, died April 14.
Fourteen candidates applied for the position. However, two candidates withdrew their applications.
School directors interviewed the remaining candidates at a special meeting Wednesday and appointed Macri immediately after the interviews were concluded.
Youngstown man shot
YOUNGSTOWN -- Lamon Smith, 22, of Wydesteel Avenue was shot in the right shoulder-chest area and right arm around 8:20 p.m. Thursday in a parking lot at Wilson High School on Gibson Street.
Smith identified the shooter as being 17 or 18 years old and wearing a sweat outfit.
Four spent rounds were found in the parking lot. No motive was given for the shooting.
Smith was driven to St. Elizabeth Health Center by his brother. Smith was in stable condition Friday evening.
Vehicle break-ins
YOUNGSTOWN -- Six vehicles parked at The Cell, 221 Belmont Ave., were broken into around 2 a.m. Friday, reports show.
Police said windows were smashed and a variety of items taken, including CD players, a $500 motorcycle helmet, tennis shoes, stereo equipment, a wallet with $400 and inline skates.
Police said several vehicles were also broken into at The Mixx nightclub in the Uptown section of the city and at The Draught House downtown. Police suspect a van seen by one witness may have been used in the thefts.
Rabies vaccinationsfor dogs, cats, ferrets
STRUTHERS -- Rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats and ferrets will be offered for $2 each on May 7 at Struthers City Hall police garage at 6 Elm St.
The vaccinations will be given from 1 to 4 p.m. No appointment is necessary.
Rabies vaccination of all dogs, cats and ferrets over 3 months of age is required in Mahoning County.
The clinic is being sponsored by the Struthers City Board of Health and the District Board of Health of Mahoning County, in conjunction with volunteer veterinarians.
Dogs must be on a leash. Cats and ferrets must be caged or carried in a cloth pillowcase.
