College labeled 'Best Value'
GROVE CITY, Pa. - Grove City College recently was named one of the nation's "Best Value" undergraduate institutions by The Princeton Review. Princeton Review selected the schools based on data the company obtained from administrators at more than 350 colleges and surveys of students attending them.
The New York-based education services company chose Grove City as one of 81 schools it recommends in the 2006 edition of its book, "America's Best Value Colleges," published by Random House/Princeton Review. The book, on sale now, is a guide to colleges with outstanding academics, generous financial aid packages and relatively low costs. It includes public and private colleges and universities in 35 states.
Contest winners lauded
YOUNGSTOWN -- Several schoolchildren were honored recently as winners in the School Bundle Day poster competition sponsored by Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries.
The contest was held in conjunction with the 44th annual School Bundle Day donation drive. Students from Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties participated in the contest, which required contestants to draw their ideas of how Goodwill helps people with disabilities.
First-place winners are: Gabriella Gaudio, Shelby Lukas, Morgan McAllister, Korinna Sherman, Elizabeth Gaudio, Katie Fernstrom and and Amber Galgozy.
Young artists honored
YOUNGSTOWN -- St. Luke School announced winners in the Diocesan Art Festival, which is held annually at Byzantine Catholic Central School and is designed to bring recognition to the talented students in the diocese. Winners include: watercolors, Adam Wheeler; pencil drawings, Marissa Mediati and Alex Cook; pastels, Emily Alcorn; printmaking, Shayla DeCaptia and Farouk Elnaas; mixed media, Zachary Campbell.
Student sign-ups in May
HANOVERTON -- The United Local School District will be accepting applications Monday through May 31 for open enrollment for the 2005-06 school year. Packets may be picked up at the superintendent's office, 8143 state Route 9, Hanoverton. Applications will be accepted for all grade levels, however kindergarten applicants will be placed on a waiting list so kindergarten enrollment does not exceed 96 students. Writing contest winners
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation will present the winners of its annual Student Holocaust Writing Contest at the 12th Annual Holocaust Commemoration event at noon May 10 in the Rotunda of the Mahoning County Courthouse .
The theme for this year's contest was "From Liberation to the Pursuit of Justice." Students submitted original poems and essays that addressed the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps and the subsequent prosecution of Nazi war criminals.
The winners in the various categories are: T.J. Schmidt, Grade 7-8 poetry, W.S. Guy Middle School; Ellyanna Kessler, Grade 7-8 essay, Boardman Center Middle School; Taylor Summerfield, Grade 9-10 poetry, Howland High School; Claire Heidenreich, Grade 9-10 essay, Howland High School; Kayla Yurco, Grade 11-12 poetry and essay, Howland High School.
Education conference set
LISBON -- The Columbiana County Educational Service Center Department of Distance Learning Education, 38720 Saltwell Road, will host a video conference from 10 a.m. to noon May 9 in the center's distance learning studio.
The conference will feature U.S. Reps. Ted Strickland of Lisbon, D-6th, and Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th. It is open to high school students and teachers and will explore educational and governmental issues and other issues dominating society today. The conference will be simulcast live over WKBN Radio 570 in Boardman. Participating students and teachers will be able to ask the congressmen questions, as will callers to "The Dan Rivers Show." Student art awards
BAZETTA -- Trumbull County Educational Service Center held its Student Art Show recently at Forum Health Elm Road Medical Park.
Mark Bush of Niles McKinley High School won the Best of Show and People's Choice awards, and Judge's Awards went to Alicia Lendvay and Julie Leveto, both of Niles McKinley, and Annah Trunick of Joseph Badger High School.
The event showcased 92 artworks created by students in grades 9-12 from 14 school districts. The student artwork on display included photography, sculpture, ceramics, prints, drawings and paintings.
Weathersfield enrollment
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Weathersfield Local School District will be accepting applications Monday through June 1 for open enrollment for the 2005-06 school year. Applications may be filled out at any of the district's schools or the administrative office located at the middle school, 3750 N. Main St., weekdays between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. . Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis, according to available openings in each grade. Applicants will be notified by June 30 as to whether they have been accepted.
Mineral Ridge concert
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Mineral Ridge High School and Eighth Grade Band Concert will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the high school auditorium.
Scholarship offered
SALEM -- The Columbiana County Association of Family and Consumer Sciences is offering a $150 scholarship to college students majoring in family and consumer sciences, home economics or a related field such as dietetics, nutrition, child development, housing, culinary arts or interior design.
To be eligible, a student must be a college junior or senior or have completed half of a two-year program in any of those fields. They also must be a resident of Columbiana or any bordering Ohio county, including Mahoning, Jefferson, Stark and Carroll.

German studies pay off
NORTH LIMA -- David Pavlansky, son of Dave and Kathy Pavlansky of North Lima, recently won an all-expense paid summer study trip to Germany. David was one of almost 26,000 students who competed for the study trip by participating in a nationwide German testing program administered by the American Association of Teachers of German. Forty-six students were selected to receive the trip. Pavlansky is a student at South Range High School. Sam Landry is his German teacher.
