YSU Writers to speak at Press Day



YOUNGSTOWN -- Brent Cunningham, managing editor of the Columbia Journalism Review, and David Lee Morgan Jr., author of "LeBron James: The Rise of a Star," are among the featured speakers at the annual Press Day on Tuesday at Youngstown State University.
The event attracts nearly 530 students and 37 newspaper advisers from 24 area high schools.
Cunningham speaks at 8:05 a.m. in the Chestnut Room, and at 7:30 p.m. in Kilcawley's Ohio Room. The evening lecture, titled "Understanding the Other: Class and Journalism in America," is co-sponsored by the YSU Center for Working Class Studies and Press Day. Cunningham has been a reporter, researcher and writer for Life magazine, the Charleston Daily Mail and Crittenden Publishing.
Morgan, a 1993 YSU graduate and a sports reporter with the Akron Beacon Journal, will speak at 12:30 p.m. in the Chestnut Room of YSU's Kilcawley Center. Morgan is a former Vindicator reporter.
Sandra Woodcock, director of the Newspaper Association of America Foundation, will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the Ohio Room.
Press Day, co-sponsored by YSU and the Tri-County Journalism Association, also features more than three dozen other sessions featuring local newspaper, television and radio reporters and personalities.
Awards will be given to high school journalists in dozens of categories, including best news article, feature article, editorial, editorial cartoon, sports story, headline, newspaper layout and yearbook.
