PREP SOFTBALL Poland cruises to 14th straight



The Bulldogs rolled past Struthers 7-0 in Metro Athletic Conference play.
POLAND -- Poland rolled to its 14th straight victory by shutting out Struthers 7-0 in a Metro Athletic Conference game Wednesday afternoon.
Liz Maher and Allie Patton combined for a four-hitter, with Maher (4-0) getting the win.
Jenna Susani led the Bulldogs (7-0 in MAC) with three hits, while Ashley Tabla added two hits including a double. Maher and Amanda Gittings also doubled for the winners.
Niki McGuire had a double for Struthers (4-9, 1-6).
Uniontown Lake 1, Boardman 0
BOARDMAN -- Brittany Stefano's first-inning single plated the game's only run as Uniontown Lake turned back Boardman in a Federal League contest.
Julie Boyes (10-1) pitched the win for Lake and allowed five hits, while Ashley DiDomenico (8-7) also allowed just five his in the loss for Boardman.
DiDomenico also had two of the five hits for the Spartans (10-7, 3-4), while Rachel Walker had two hits for Lake (11-3, 8-0).
Girard 6, Brookfield 2
GIRARD -- Kim Turner hit three singles, drove in a run and scored once for the Indians (6-12, 2-6). Krista Kirkpatrick added two singles and drove in three runs and Hillary Patterson hit two singles, drove in two runs and scored twice.
Losing pitcher Jessie Shaffer hit a pair of singles and Stephanie Geer added a double and single for Brookfield (3-11, 2-7).
Lakeview 2, LaBrae 1
CORTLAND -- The Bulldogs (8-5, 4-5 Trumbull Athletic Conference) got the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
With one out, Amy Downs singled. Then with two out, Lindsay Whetzel, the winning pitcher, walked and Kelly Moore singled home Downs.
Whetzel (4-1) came on relief in the sixth inning to pick up the win. Michelle Antonelli had a double and single and drove in a run and Downs also had a double.
Lia Gordon and Stepfanie Higgins each hit a pair of singles for LaBrae (5-4, 4-3).
Springfield 10, McDonald 6
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Ashley Fagnano led the Tigers attack with four singles, while teammate Christie Warren added a double and single.
Courtney Vitullo paced the Blue Devils with three singles apiece.
Western Reserve 1, Lowellville 0
BERLIN CENTER -- Stevie Banks tossed a two-hit shutout and led Western Reserve past Lowellville.
Banks (5-2) struck out six as the Blue Devils improved to 12-5, 6-3 ICL.
The winning run came in the first inning when Katie Harmon walked was sacrificed to second and stole third and scored on a Lowellville error.
The Rockets fall to 10-6, 3-4 ICL.
Mathews 11, Bloomfield 1
VIENNA -- Caitlyn Youngs pitched a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts and also had a pair of doubles to lead Mathews past Bloomfield.
The Mustangs (12-5, 9-1 East Suburban League) also got a pair of hits from Rachel Woolf, while Amber Jarvis added a triple.
Ursuline 16, Rayen 0
YOUNGSTOWN -- Natalie Palermo hit a three-run home run in the third inning and singled in two other runs for the Irish (11-6, 5-0 Steel Valley Conference.
Winning pitcher Maureen Cearfoss hit three singles and drove in two runs and Jessica Yarab hit a double and single.
