Indians' Shuey retires
CLEVELAND -- Reliever Paul Shuey retired Wednesday, ending his comeback with Cleveland Indians.
The 34-year-old Shuey, who missed last season for Los Angeles because of injuries, decided to call it quits after making an appearance for Double-A Akron on Monday. Shuey signed a minor league contract with the Indians in January.
Shuey pitched for Cleveland from 1994-2002, and was one of the top right-handed setup men in the AL. The No. 2 overall pick in the 1992 draft, Shuey went 45-27 in 451 career outings.
The Indians traded him in July 2002 to the Dodgers for three pitchers.
Brown visits Steelers
PITTSBURGH -- Former Pro Bowl linebacker Chad Brown, looking for a new team after being released last week by the Seattle Seahawks, visited Wednesday with his old team, the Steelers.
Brown played in Pittsburgh from 1993-96 before spending eight seasons in Seattle, but was cut after the Seahawks asked him to cut his base salary from $4.2 million to $1 million. When he didn't, the Seahawks signed linebacker Jamie Sharper to a $17.5 million, six-year deal.
The Steelers wouldn't seem to have the salary cap room to sign the 34-year-old Brown for even the $1 million figure he rejected in Seattle, but he still wanted to meet with them.
