Unbeaten Poland edges Springfield



Ursuline blanked Howland while Champion's Kasey Karr tossed a two-hitter.
POLAND -- The Poland High softball team remains unbeaten, but the Bulldogs needed the help of an error in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Springfield, 3-2.
The Bulldogs (13-0) scored Tuesday's winning run when Jenna Susany hit a groundball to third base. When the throw went over the first baseman's head, Ciera Urichich scored the winning run from second base.
Urichich had two hits including a double as did Liz Maher. Susany also added a double.
Maher picked up the victory in relief while Colleen Clapp suffered the loss for the Tigers (12-4).
Girard 6, Niles 1
NILES -- Kassie Simeon tossed a three-hitter and sparked Girard.
Kelly Bondor had a double and Hillery Patterson a triple for the Indians (5-12).
Ursuline 5, Howland 0
YOUNGSTOWN -- Maureen Cearfoss pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out eight.
The Irish (10-6) got triples from Jenna Klempay and Natalie Palermo and a double by Alessandra Parry. Klempay also drove in two runs.
Amy Cornicelli had two of the three hits for Howland (10-4).
Mooney 15, St. Thomas Aquinas 0
LOUISVILLE -- Dana Palazzo had three hits and scored three runs while DiAndra Dibacco, Mara Palombaro, Laura Guyer, Mimi Vitello and Colleen Courtney had doubles for the Cardinals (13-4).
Courtney (4-2) struck out six batters in three innings of work. Palombaro drove in four runs.
Aquinas is 6-8.
East Palestine 4, South Range 3
BEAVER TOWNSHIP -- Jenn Yokely tripled and Ashley Ehrenberg doubled as the Bulldogs (9-5) won in nine innings.
Raiders pitcher Skye Walley (3-8) struck out 14 batters and walked none. Lynn O'Connell and Autumn Carter each had two hits including doubles. Kelcie Witmer also doubled for South Range (3-9).
Western Reserve 4, McDonald 3
BERLIN CENTER -- Western Reserve scored on error in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat McDonald in an Inter-County League contest.
Katie Harmon pitched all nine innings allowing just two hits to pick up the victory while Kelly Ruteshin went the distance for McDonald (7-7, 2-5).
Quinn McCammon, who scored the winning run on an overthrow by Ruteshin, had two hits. Lacy Marra added two hits and two RBIs. Harmon also aided her own cause with two hits for the Blue Devils (11-5, 5-3).
Champion 9, Lakeview 0
CORTLAND -- Kasey Karr struck out 12 en route to a two-hit shutout to lead Champion in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Karr also had three RBIs for the Flashes (17-1, 8-0) while Jaclyn Carpenter had two hits and Hillary Beachy had two hits and two RBIs.
Lakeview is 7-5, 3-5.
Mathews 5, Southington 0
VIENNA -- Caitlyn Youngs (8-2) tossed a three-hitter as the Mustangs (11-5) improved to 8-1 in the East Suburban Conference.
Youngs' three hits included a double while Alycia Kolat and Jessie Hall contributed triples.
Southeast 6, Crestwood 3
RAVENNA -- Katie McCrady (5-2) fired a two-hitter to pick up the win. Megan Austin paced the Pirates with three singles.
