49ers: Quarterback Alex Smith toured his new city Monday, met the mayor, and even pushed back his flight home once he realized his beloved San Diego Padres were in town. Smith, the top pick in the NFL draft, attended the Padres game against the San Francisco Giants at SBC Park. That followed a jam-packed day that included stops at Candlestick Park, the Golden Gate Bridge, the office of mayor Gavin Newsom, and a trip down the city's famous crooked Lombard Street. "It was a great day," said Smith, a Heisman Trophy finalist who grew up admiring Steve Young and John Elway. "It got me even more excited."
Cardinals: Receiver Anquan Boldin skipped the first voluntary on-field workout Monday because of the team's failure to extend his contract. Boldin was the 2003 NFL offensive rookie of the year after being chosen in the second round, and believes he deserves first-round money. Also Monday, the Cardinals released offensive tackle Anthony Clement and signed four veteran free agents -- offensive tackles Ian Allen and Adam Haayer, kicker Matt Fordyce and cornerback Raymond Wells and two undrafted free agents, quarterback Tim Chang of Hawaii and wide receiver Carlyle Holiday of Notre Dame.
Redskins: The agent for receiver Rod Gardner met Monday with coach Joe Gibbs, but there was no immediate resolution to Gardner's status with the team. The Redskins gave Gardner permission to seek a trade earlier this off-season. Though several teams expressed interest, no team has agreed to either the Redskins' trade demands or Gardner's contract wishes. He's in the final year of his contract with Washington.
Lions: Receiver Az-Zahir Hakim and free safety Brock Marion were released, and defensive tackle Brandon Kennedy was signed to a one-year deal. Kennedy will provide depth if he makes the team after being cut by Denver late in training camp last year.
Bengals: Defensive end Elton Patterson, who played in six games for Jacksonville last season, signed a two-year contract Monday. Patterson was the Bengals' seventh-round draft pick in 2003 from Central Florida. He was on the roster that season, but never got into a game.
Dolphins: University of Miami quarterback Brock Berlin agreed to a free-agent contract, the player's agent said Monday. He is expected to be with the Dolphins for the start of their first rookie minicamp Friday. Berlin's agent, David Dunn, confirmed the deal. The team has not formally announced the signing. Berlin would be the fourth quarterback on the Dolphins' roster, along with A.J. Feeley, Gus Frerotte and Sage Rosenfels.
Vikings: Veteran defensive end Kenny Mixon and two other players were released on Monday. Mixon, who had 46 tackles and 21/2 sacks last season, ran into trouble off the field several times in his three seasons with the Vikings. The Vikings also released receiver Blake Elliott and linebacker Mike Nattiel and signed rookie free agent defensive tackle David Harley from Rutgers.
Munoz calls its quits: University of Tennessee offensive tackle Michael Munoz decided to quit football after he was not chosen in the NFL draft over the weekend, his father, NFL Hall of Famer Anthony Munoz said Monday. The All-American from Cincinnati started 46 games in his career despite injuries, including a torn rotator cuff that ended his senior year before the Southeastern Conference championship game in December.
Eagles: Five wide receivers were among the 10 rookie free agents signed Monday. The Eagles also signed punter Mark Mariscal, who was on the New York Jets' practice squad in 2003. Wideouts Grant Adams (Boston College), Jared Jones (Syracuse), Jason Peebler (Massachusetts), Chauncey Stovall (Florida State) and Isaac West (Furman), linebacker Martin Patterson (Texas Christian), tight ends Stephen Spach (Fresno State) and Andy Thorn (Northern Iowa), free safety Jeremy Thornburg (Northern Arizona) and cornerback Aric Williams (Oregon State) were the undrafted players signed by the NFC champions.
