Ursuline's Satterlee earns honor
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- Union College's Erin Satterlee, an Ursuline High graduate, was named Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball player of the week.
A second baseman, Satterlee batted .500 with five runs scored and five RBIs. His best game came against Spalding (Ky.) when he went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and four RBIs.
He's hitting .372 with six home runs and 48 RBIs, scored 42 runs and stole 12 bases for the Bulldogs (37-13, 14-6) in the AAC.
Malone
Senior Shannon Smith (West Branch) and junior Chelsie Helbeck (East Palestine) are members of the women's tennis squad.
Smith, at No. 3 singles, was the only Pioneer to win a match in an 8-1 loss to Tiffin.
Freshman Luke McCluggage of North Jackson placed first in the 1500 (4:07.6) and third in the 800 (2:03.4) at the Stark County Track and Field Challenge meet at Malone.
Freshman Aubree Horning, a Salem native, finished third in the women's shot put with a toss of 35 feet, 101/2 inches.
Scotty Jones of East Palestine shot 1-over par (71-72-143) to place second as Malone won the NAIA Classic at Indiana Wesleyan.
The Pioneers' two-day total for the event was 591. Lindenwood was second with 603 and Indiana Wesleyan was third with 604.
Ohio Northern
Josh Conkey continues to lead the baseball team with a .347 batting average.
An Ursuline High graduate, he is 26-for-75 for the Polar Bears (11-13), with two home runs, a double and 18 RBIs.
Westminster
Kevin Gesacion has appeared in 20 games this season for the baseball team. He is 28-for-68 (.412) with five doubles, a home runs and 19 RBIs.
The Boardman High graduate has helped the Titans to a 16-5 record.
Sophomore softball pitcher Jennifer Pancake, a Boardman native, after a tough 1-0 loss to Grove City, still leads the Presidents' Athletic Conference and team with a 0.60 ERA.
She's pitched in 17 games, posted a 13-3 record, allowed 53 hits, eight runs and struck out 70 in 932/3 innings for the Titans (18-6, 1-3 PAC).
A designated hitter, Pancake is batting .280 (21-for-75). She's hit five doubles and drove in 10 runs.
Senior first baseman Heide Kemmel of Poland has 22 hits in 83 at bats, with four doubles, two home runs, 16 RBIs and three stolen bases.
Ryan Mistovich of Boardman, a junior, has posted a 6-3 record at No. 6 singles for the men's tennis team. He's 0-1 at No. 3 singles and 0-3 at No. 5 singles.
Gannon
Softball player Joanna Fergus of Austintown is one of 19 student-athletes around the nation to be among the first scholarship recipients of the Tug McGraw Foundation's Diamond 45 Scholarship Program.
The scholarship were awarded to students who exemplify McGraw's "Ya Gotta Believe" philosophy and were donated by UbiquiTel Inc.
Hiram
Jeff Nastase of Poland continues to lead the Terriers with a .429 batting average, 33 hits, nine doubles and 50 total bases. He also pitched six innings, scattering four hits and striking out two top pick up a win against Oberlin.
Senior Jeremy Krol (6-0) of Leavittsburg worked six innings, struck out five and didn't walk a batter for the Terriers (14-10, 6-2 North Coast Athletic Conference) in a recent game.
Wabash
Junior first baseman Jared Bogan of Struthers hit a pair three-run home runs and finished with eight RBIs against Denison last week. He was 10-for-20 in six games during the week, with a double and a triple in addition to the home runs.
