TECH CENTER OFFERS FREE GED PRACTICE TEST

Tech Center offersfree GED practice test
CANFIELD -- The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center is offering the GED practice test at no cost on a walk-in basis from 4 to 9 p.m. May 5 at the Educational Resource Center at Southern Park Mall, near Sears.
Qualified participants need to be at least 18, not enrolled in high school and have an Ohio driver's license or an Ohio identification card. Passing the practice test qualifies participants to receive a fee waiver for the GED test.
The actual test will be given at the school May 18 and 19. For information on both the practice and official GED test, call (330) 729-4100.
Documentary earns honors
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning Valley Historical Society announced the winners of its annual History Day.
The are Dan Centofani, Emily Dale, Allison Giancola, Dylan Thomas and Patrick Thomas. The Struthers High School students created the documentary "Learning from the Grave."
These students each will receive a different historical photo reproduction of Oak Hill Cemetery, a family pass to The Arms Family Museum of Local History and a one-year membership to the MVHS.
History Day encourages youths to become involved in historical studies outside the classroom by inviting them to explore a theme in history. This year's theme was "Communication in History: the Key to Understanding."
Harding High to laudhonor roll students
WARREN -- Warren G. Harding High School's Improvement Committee will sponsor its annual Renaissance Banquet to recognize honor roll students at 6:30 p.m. May 4 at St. Demetrios Community Center, 3223 Atlantic St. N.E.
The Renaissance Program, created in 1991, is available to Harding and Trumbull County Technical and Career Center students who maintain a grade-point average of 3.2 or higher. Gold card students must have a 4.0 average or higher (186); red cards are for students with 3.5 to 3.99 (306); and white cards are for students with a 3.2 to 3.49 (161). Students may apply each trimester for these cards, which reward them with a variety of incentives donated by local businesses and sponsors.
The evening's program includes Renaissance Program Awards, United Community Financial Corp. Scholarship, and Marine Corps and Air Force Awards.
Dobbins pupil raises funds
POLAND -- Nine-year-old Colin Rody, a third-grader at Dobbins Elementary School in Poland, raised $2,250 for the American Heart Association during the school's Jump Rope For Heart fund-raiser. The school raised a total of $5,850 for the association's research and educational efforts in the community.
Jump Rope For Heart promotes the value of physical activity to elementary school pupils while showing them they can help their community.
New scholarshipat Penn State Beaver
MONACA, Pa. -- Michael Baker Corp. has pledged $100,000 to establish the Richard and Margaret Shaw Trustee Scholarship at Penn State Beaver in honor of the company's chairman, interim president and chief executive officer, and his wife.
The Michael Baker Corp. Scholarship will benefit engineering majors or other students with financial need.

Roosevelt 'Spring Sing'scheduled for Friday
McDONALD -- The annual Roosevelt Elementary School "Spring Sing," titled "From Broadway to Hollywood," will be at 7 p.m. Friday in the high school auditorium, 600 Iowa Ave. The event is presented by the third- and fourth-graders and admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children.
College Access Programgets $10,000 grant
WARREN -- For the second consecutive year, the Mahoning Valley College Access Program was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Warren Area Chamber of Commerce's Education, Civic and Cultural Foundation Inc.
Janice E. Strasfeld, senior vice president of The Regional Chamber, announced the award. The money will be used to help finance MVCAP scholarships for Trumbull County graduates.
The MVCAP is a nonprofit, charitable organization, launched in 2001, with a mission to increase the number of students in the Mahoning Valley who continue their education beyond high school. MVCAP has raised more than $480,000 to date and awarded over 45 Last-Dollar scholarships.
Springfield offers plays
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Springfield Local High School will present four one-act plays in the school's auditorium at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
BHS to present 'Nunsense'
BOARDMAN -- The Boardman High School's Drama Guild will perform Dan Goggin's musical "Nunsense" at the high school's Performing Arts Center. "Nunsense" opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday and runs again at 7:30 p.m. April 30 and 2:30 p.m. May 1.
"Nunsense" is the story of a talent show staged by the five survivors at the Little Sisters of Hobeken nunnery, after the rest of the sisterhood have succumbed to botulism after eating vichyssoise prepared by Sister Julia, Child of God.
For the Saturday performance only, there will be a special dinner theater. This is a reservation-only event. Regular seating will still be available for this performance. Advanced seating may be purchased by calling (330) 758-1987, or tickets may be purchased at the door before the show.
