New Castle accepting school board applications

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- New Castle Area School Board is accepting applications from individuals interested in filling a seat on the board recently vacated by the death of Larry Nord.
Nord, who served as legislative chairman for the school board and was in the last year of his second four-year term, died April 14 at his home in New Castle.
According to state law, the eight remaining board members have 30 days to name someone to complete his term, which is to expire Nov. 30.
Applications are being accepted until 4 p.m. Wednesday. Candidates will be interviewed at a public board meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday.
The board is planning to vote for Nord's replacement at Thursday's meeting at the conclusion of the interviews.
The school board canceled a special meeting scheduled for Wednesday that had been announced as an executive, or closed session, to discuss replacing Nord.
Concerned that such a meeting could violate the state's open meetings law, school officials announced they would solicit applications and discuss Nord's replacement at a public meeting.
