Neshannock police to lease car, use money saved for computer

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Neshannock Township Police Department will lease rather than buy a new Ford Explorer to save money in the 2005 budget.
Police Superintendent Philip Carlo received approval from township supervisors Wednesday to lease the vehicle from Day Fleet Chevrolet of Westmoreland County, Pa.
The cost of the police package was $27,175. The supervisors budgeted $25,000 for a new police sport utility vehicle for 2005.
The two-year lease requires payments of $14,000 each year with an option to buy the vehicle for $1 at the end of the lease.
Carlo said buying the vehicle through a lease will help free some money in this year's budget. He said he plans to use the remaining money budgeted for 2005 to buy a laptop computer for the department and a video camera for the new vehicle as well as some other equipment.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will begin work to widen Mercer Road. Supervisors gave Guselik Construction permission to use Mitchell Road to haul material used during the project.
Supervisor John DiCola Jr. said the construction company is required to buy a $19,375 bond because the weight of the material will be over the weight limit of 20 tons for Mitchell Road.
Guselik would be responsible for any damage to Mitchell Road.
