SCHOOLS Elementary principal plans to retire in July

The board will begin interviewing replacements in May.

NORTH LIMA -- South Range Elementary School Principal Steve Krivan has worn many hats in his 26 years at the school.
He has coached freshman basketball and served as bus and special education coordinator, among numerous other tasks. But now, Krivan said, it's time to go. He is retiring, effective at the end of the summer school session in July.
On Tuesday, at a regular meeting, the South Range Local Board of Education accepted Krivan's resignation.
The school board will interview candidates for the position May 20 through June 20, to ensure Krivan is replaced by early August.
Retirement plans
Meanwhile, Krivan said he plans to spend more time caring for his mother and to help his wife, Janey, care for her mother. He said he and his wife also are looking to spend more time with their daughter, Katie, a freshman at the University of South Florida in Tampa.
"I love South Range, the staff and the kids," he said. "But ... I've evaluated my situation and decided this is best for me and for my family."
Krivan started his career in education 35 years ago. He was as an elementary school teacher in Austintown for nine years before moving to South Range. He has worked at South Range collectively for 26 years, leaving once to pursue another opportunity but returning several years ago to the elementary school principal's post.
At South Range, he initiated the every-other-day, all-day kindergarten program and started a branch of the Future Teachers of America organization. He also established the annual Dinner With Dad program, the annual PTO Christmas auction and other events. He said he will continue serving as president of the South Range Schools Foundation as long as possible.
