SOFTBALL
CLEVELAND -- The Youngstown State softball team (16-27, 2-11 Horizon League) had a long day -- literally. The Penguins dropped a doubleheader to in-state rival Cleveland State at Viking Field, which included a 13-inning 4-3 loss in the opener and a 6-5 defeat in game two. The Vikings improved to 12-21 overall and 4-4 in the Horizon League. In the opener, the Penguins scored two unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning and jumped out to a 2-0. Sophomore Tricia Hilbish held the Vikings in check for 5.1 innings and allowed just three hits, but the Vikings tied the contest in the bottom of sixth with two unearned runs - one off Hilbish and one off reliever Karlie Burnell -- to knot the game at 2-2. In the top of the ninth, Tiffany Patteson singled home Char Kudlock to give the Penguins a 3-2 advantage but Cleveland State answered with a run of their own to retie the contest at 3-3. The Penguins and Vikings both threatened in the 10th and 11th innings but each chance to score was squandered. The Vikings posted the game-winning hit with a single through the right side after two Penguin errors placed runners on second and third with one out. In the night cap, the Vikings posted three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a three-run advantage, 4-1. The Penguins regained the lead, 5-4, in the top of the seventh keyed by a two-run home run by Kudlock. The Vikings, though rallied with two more runs on a sacrifice fly and Anna Hubert's double to to right-center field. Youngstown State pounded out 14 hits in game one and 10 more in the night cap, but committed nine errors on the day. Freshman Sarah Berry went 5-for-9 on the day with three doubles, including a 3-for-5 performance with two doubles in the opener. The Penguins host Buffalo on Thursday at 4 p.m. at McCune Park at Canfield.

TENNIS
CINCINNATI -- The Youngstown State women's tennis team lost their final regular-season match of the season at Xavier at the Xavier University Tennis Courts. The Penguin' Michelle Fuleky was the only player two win a set against the Musketeers, but lost the super tiebreaker 10-7 to Alicia Papa after splitting the first two sets (6-4, 4-6). XU's Lauren Clary defeated Karen Najbert, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1; Kristen Clary beat Whitney Thomas 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2; Stephanie Bauer defeated Heather Hagood, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3; Jackie Vilines beat Nicole Muzechuk 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4; and Emily Tuchscherer beat Krystle Hively 6-2, 6-0. In doubles play, XU's Bauer and Lauren Clary defeated Najbert and Peretti, 8-0 at No. 1, Xavier's Papa and Vilines beat Thomas and Fuleky, 8-4 at No. 2 and Kristen Clary and Potts defeated Muzechuk and Hagood, 8-3 at No. 3.
