Youngstown State freshman Bethany Anderson broke two school throws records to highlight the Penguins' weekend at the Sea Ray Relays, hosted by the University of Tennessee, and the Slippery Rock Invitational.
Anderson placed third in the hammer with a school-record mark of 159 feet, 9 inches at the Relays to top the old record by 71/2 feet. She then broke the 14-year-old shot put record with an eighth-place throw of 45-8.
Emily Schnitkey placed ninth in the steeplechase with a mark of 11:08.10 while Carly Youlton placed 13th in the triple jump (36-43/4) and Katy Williams was 14th in the discus (137-6).
In the sprints, Danielle Bolt finished 21st in the 100 with a mark of 12.05, Jeanna Cunningham placed 23rd in the 400 in 56.16 and Aaliyah Gillespie placed 27th in the 100 hurdles in 14.64.
Nick Buzek highlighted the men's squad with a fourth-place time of 14:51.20 while Nick Smith placed 10th in the steeplechase in 9:44.95. Dave Mealy finished 13th in the 10,000 with a mark of 32:11.29, Scott Weiser was 36th in the 400 (49.83) and R.D. Goodright was 36th in the 800 (1:55.20).
At Slippery Rock, Satara Freeman and Lindsay Wojciak each won events. Freeman won the 100 hurdles in 14.76 and was fifth in the 400 hurdles (1:07.58), while Wojciak had the top time in the steeplechase (12:20.96). Gina Mavrikis was second in the 1,500 (5:01.04) and fifth in the 800 (2:23.30).
Amanda Barbone placed fourth in the shot put (38-51/2) and sixth in the discus (120-11) while Ashley Oliver was fourth in the 100 (12.83) and Kim Jendre was fourth in the 3,000 (11:26.30).
Matt Paullin had the highest finish for the men with a third-place time of 15:52.28 in the 5,000. Nick Rodland was fourth in the shot put (46-6) while Kyle Dalton was sixth in the high jump (6-0).
Women's golf
SALEM -- Youngstown State placed second and freshman Brittany Jones was third at the YSU Spring Invitational Monday at Salem Hills Golf and Country Club.
Jones, the first round leader, fired another 78 Monday finishing with a two-round total of 156. She finished two shots behind Cleveland State's Kristen Obush and Butler's Lynnsey Showers who carded 154s. Obush earned the victory in a playoff when she eagled the 10th hole. Showers had the low score of the day, firing a 74 while Obush had a 75.
Butler won the team event with a 36-hole score of 639 (325-314) while YSU had 659 (335-324). Cleveland State was third with 665 (341-324), IPFW was fourth with 689 (352-337) and Walsh finished fifth with 707 (359-348).
YSU senior Gina Abruzzino shot 78-163 and freshman Felicia Ciotola had an 83-163. Mallory Wyderka finished 12th with 80-168, while Bonnie Sherman and Kristen Albrecht tied for 19th, finishing with identical rounds of 88-174.

Browns draft party
NILES -- The Ohio Browns Boosters will hold an NFL draft day party Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Center Stage Grille at the Expo Center.

*MORGANTOWN, W. Va. -- It was a good trip south for the Steel Valley Boxing Club as two of their fighters were winners at the Ramada Inn Saturday night.
Cruiserweight Zack Page (5-2) from Warren increased his winning streak to five as he stopped Eric Starr from Hillsborough, N.C., in the second round.
Jesse Williams in a junior middleweight bout easily won a four round decision.
Jesse Williams (2-1-1) from Youngstown, a former Buckeye Elks amateur, was the aggressor throughout a junior middleweight four- rounder, defeating Al Bussey of Washington, D.C.
*TOLEDO -- Dallas Vargas won for the 19th time in 21 pro fights, winning a unanimous decision over Ted Muller in the main event at the Toledo Sports Arena Saturday.
Also, Devin Vargas improved to 2-0 with a first-round knockout of Chuckie Brown of Akron.
Bocce champs
YOUNGSTOWN -- Fernando's Wedgewood Pizza won the Pacentrano Club's city bocce championship.
The title was the third in the last four years for the team. Team members were Nick Gentile, Gene Russo (captain), Bob Comardo, Tom George, Mario Diiullo, Sal Sorice, Joe Pompeo, Geno DeChellis, Dom Infante and Nunzio Napolitano.
