NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Springfield Township will host a meeting for Mahoning County commissioners at 7 p.m. April 25 in the Springfield Local Intermediate School auditorium, 11333 state Route 170.
The half-percent county sales tax on the May primary ballot will be discussed.
The public is invited.
Roads to be closedfor MS Walk-a-Thon
YOUNGSTOWN -- These roads in Mill Creek Park will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 24 for the Multiple Sclerosis Services Agency Walk-a-Thon: East Glacier Drive, Robinson Hill Drive, Slippery Rock Bridge, East Park Drive, Valley Drive, Old Mill Drive and East Newport Drive.
Old Furnace Road and Canfield Road will remain open to traffic.
Home-buying event
YOUNGSTOWN -- Family Financial Education Services is sponsoring a free workshop for first-time home buyers from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 4 at the Family Service Agency, 535 Marmion Ave.
The workshop is designed to cover basic home-buying information such as determining affordability, budgeting, credit problems and the loan application process.
All participants will receive a certificate of attendance that will satisfy the education requirements for some mortgage programs.

Children services plansopen house April 28
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County Children Services will have an open house at its new building from 9 to 11 a.m. April 28 in conjunction with Child Abuse Prevention Month.
The CSB's new building is at 222 West Federal St. downtown.

Rail services to befocus of meeting
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city and Eastgate Regional Council of Governments are hosting a public meeting about passenger rail services in Youngstown.
James Senery, executive director of the Ohio Rail Development Commission, will present the Ohio Rail Hub Plan from 5:30 to 7 p.m. April 21 at Oakhill Renaissance Place.
The Ohio Rail Hub Plan is designed to offer competitive passenger rail service in Ohio and improve freight flow, create jobs and provide travel options.
Free safety checkup set
CANFIELD -- A free safety checkup for child car restraints is scheduled for May 11 in the Government Building at the Canfield Fairgrounds.
The child car restraints will be checked by a certified safety specialist.
The checkups will be scheduled from 3 to 7 p.m. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the Mahoning Valley Safe Kids Coalition at (330) 884-4031.
According to Mary Moore, Mahoning County Farm Bureau safety coordinator, the size and weight of the child are key in deciding which car restraint is best, and a common error made is using a hand-me-down that does not fit or meet safety codes and is installed incorrectly.
The free checkup is co-sponsored by the Mahoning Valley Safe Kids Coalition and the Mahoning County Farm Bureau.
