Niles graduate re-enlists
1st Sgt. William Scott Slade, a 1986 graduate from Niles McKinley High School, will be transferred in June to Camp Pendleton, Calif., for duty with 2nd Battalion, 5th Regiment, the most decorated infantry unit in the Marine Corps.
Slade recently re-enlisted, taking him to 23 years service in the Marine Corps. He is currently stationed at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C., where he serves as the senior enlisted advisor to the commanding officer, Co. G, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion.
He is married to the former Kristie Scirocco of Girard and they have two children; Joey and Krista. His parents are Dick and Jane Skelton of Niles.
Marine assumes duties
Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Quinn J. Colella, son of Pamela A. and Joseph J. Colella of New Waterford, and the Marines of 2nd Force Service Support Group recently assumed operational control of Marine Corps Logistics forces while stationed at Camp Taqaddum, Iraq.
Colella's unit deployed from Camp Lejeune, N. C. in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and provides logistical support including supplies, maintenance, transportation, landing support and health services for II Marine Expeditionary Force.
Colella is a 2003 graduate of East Palestine High School and joined the Marine Corps in June 2003.
Guard member deployed
Army National Guard 1st Sgt. William A. Workley is currently deployed to Southwest Asia in the Persian Gulf region to support the mission of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The soldier is a member of the 237th Personnel Service Battalion assigned at Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base, Columbus.
Workley, a first sergeant, is the son of William H. Workley of Columbus and Carole A. Workley of Austintown. He is married to his wife, Amy.
In 1984, he graduated from Lakeview High School, Cortland, and received a bachelor's degree from Franklin University, Columbus.
ADVANCED TRAINING
Captain awarded master's
Air Force Capt. Cheryl L. Hetherington, daughter of John T. and Carol A. McClellan of Farmdale, has been awarded a master's degree from the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton. The institute is the Air Force's graduate school of engineering and management as well as the institute for technical professional continuing education.
The graduate studied under the Air Force Institute of Technology education program that provides graduates with defense-focused and professional continuing education and research to sustain the technological supremacy of America's air and space programs.
Hetherington was an operations research major. Her husband, Brian, is the son of Carol L. Hetherington of Hiram.
The captain graduated in 1990 from Maplewood High School and received a bachelor's degree in 1994 from Youngstown State University.
Captain earns master's
Air Force Capt. David C. Budzko, son of C. John and Irene A. Budzko of Vienna, has completed an Air Force Institute of Technology program at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif., and earned a master's degree.
The school provides accredited graduate-level resident education for selected members of the armed forces in the administrative, communication, computer, engineering, meteorology, oceanography, science and national security affairs fields.
Budzko, a weather officer, graduated in 1989 from Mathews High School and received an associate degree in 1995 from Okaloosa-Walton Community College, Niceville, Fla. He earned a bachelor's degree in 2000 from the University of South Alabama, Mobile.
Airman completes course
Air Force Airman Jonathan A. Bruno, son of Roberta L. and Richard J. Bruno of Edinburg, Pa., has graduated from the Aircraft Electrical and Environmental Systems Apprentice Course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas.
The course trains students in the principles of operating, troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, inspecting and testing aircraft power and air distribution and electro-environmental systems, subsystems, components and associated equipment.
Bruno is a 2004 graduate of Mohawk Area Junior-Senior High School.
Apprentice graduates
Navy Hospitalman Apprentice Terry A. Pryor, son of Billie J. and John Goggins of New Castle, Pa., recently graduated from the Basic Hospital Corps School at Naval Hospital Corps School, Great Lakes, Ill.
During the 14-week course, Pryor learned a wide range of medical procedures used to provide first aid and assist Navy doctors and nurses.
Pryor also received an introductory instruction for service in a variety of medical environments, from fleet hospitals and shipboard medical departments to fleet Marine forces and medical administration offices.
Pryor is a 2004 graduate of New Castle Senior High School and joined the Navy in August 2004.
Private finishes course
Army National Guard Pvt. Richard M. Stanford has graduated from the armament/tank turret repairer advanced individual training course at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, Md.
The student learned to perform ordnance armament direct and general support maintenance repairs and troubleshoot mechanisms, systems and components on a variety of weapons.
Stanford is the son of Jean M. Stanford and Robert J. Stanford, both of Hubbard.
