PREP BASEBALL Seven-run inning keeps Howland undefeated

Tigers (7-0) erupt in fourth inning to beat Campbell Memorial, 10-7.
CAMPBELL -- During their first six games of the year, the Howland High School baseball team did not have to come from behind for a victory.
On Thursday, the Tigers showed the ability to do so as they scored seven times on as many hits in the top of the fourth inning and went on to a 10-7 victory over Campbell Memorial High at Roosevelt Park.
The Tigers (7-0) were outhit 11-9, but took advantage of mistakes in the preview of a future Metro Athletic Conference game. Next spring, Campbell (5-4) joins the MAC.
After Howland took a 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the top of the second inning, the Red Devils countered with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
RBI singles by Jim Bigley and Nick Durkin, and a sacrifice fly by Louie Samonas drove home Campbell's runs.
Seven runs in 4th inning
Howland struck back in the fourth inning. Ryan Keller started the rally when he was hit by a pitch. Ben Leece singled and another walk loaded the bases.
Dave Setting knocked in a run with a hit and Zack Byler tied the game with a single.
Jake Kakavouras' sacrifice fly gave Howland the lead and then Jared Bartholomew drove home two more runs with a triple.
Manoli Pahoulis singled Bartholomew home with the last run of the inning.
"I really praise the kids for coming back in the fourth with that seven-run inning," Howland coach Tom Eshman said.
"It took a lot of guts, and they pulled it out for us big time."
Campbell stages a rally
Campbell came right back as Bigley led off with his second single and Craig DiRienzo walked to chase Howland starter Brendan Solarz from the game.
Leece took over on the mound, and after a sacrifice advanced the runners to second and third, Samonas drove home his second run with his second single.
Frazier Trikios hit a sacrifice fly to close the gap to 8-5.
Howland managed to score two unearned runs off Campbell freshman relief pitcher Bobby Switka, who allowed only one hit and struck out three in his three innings of work.
"We put a freshman in and he showed more guts than what we have put on the field so far this year," Campbell coach Wayne Zetts said. "We can compete, we just have to make the routine plays. He [Switka] has a long life here."
Leece picks up the victory
Leece picked up his first win of the season. He allowed two runs, only one which was earned, and struck out three.
Bartholomew came on after the first two men reached base in the Red Devils' seventh inning and struck out two to pick up his first save on the season.
"He [Leece] was a little disappointed that he didn't finish the game, but he did an outstanding job on the mound," Eshman said. "Our pitching has been outstanding. Our ERA is under 2.00."
Stan Gozur (1-2) pitched the first four innings for Campbell and took the loss. He gave up eight hits and struck out two.
