Council reappoints district board member
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County General Health District Advisory Council has reappointed Margot Baird, R.N., to a five-year term on the district board of health. Baird is a graduate of St. Joseph College, North Windham, Maine, and Youngstown Hospital Association School of Nursing. She retired in 2000 after serving 13 years as school nurse for the Western Reserve School District. She is employed by Baird Brothers Sawmill of Canfield and resides in Canfield Township.
YSU Astronomy Dayplanned for Saturday
YOUNGSTOWN -- Hands-on activities and a search for a sunspot will highlight Astronomy Day at Youngstown State University's Ward Beecher Planetarium from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. A new family planetarium program, "The Great Space Treasure Hunt," will debut in the planetarium at 2 p.m. Other events include a lunar sample display on loan from NASA, demonstrations with a Van de Graff generator, and liquid nitrogen and bottle rocket launches. Weather permitting, members of the Mahoning Valley Astronomical Society will be on hand with telescopes equipped with solar filters to view sunspots. All events are free and open to the public.
Recycling, trash pickup
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Township residents who use Wolford's Refuse and Recycling for garbage pickup will be able to place one large item a week with their usual trash pickup. The township is not sponsoring its usual spring cleanup this year. Wolford's will not pick up tires. A township tire pickup is scheduled for August. Wolford's picks up one large item a week as part of its usual service. BFI has also said it will be picking up one large item a week for local residents. Trustee Chairman Fred Bobovnyk said residents with other garbage service should contact their haulers to see if they will pick up large items at no charge.
Replacement named
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Township trustees have named Cathy Zapka of Brunstetter Road to fill the unexpired term of Frank Birsksovich, a longtime member of the township Zoning Board of Appeals, who retired earlier this year. Zapka will serve out Birskovich's unexpired term that runs to Dec. 31, 2008.
Harding student pickedfor program in D.C.
WARREN -- Chavon Brown, a freshman at Warren G. Harding High School, has been selected to attend LeadAmerica's 2005 Congressional Student Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., this summer. The CSLC is a college-accredited invitational leadership program for academically talented and promising young leaders. Exceptional high school students who have a record of academic achievement and extracurricular or community involvement are invited to participate from across the United States and internationally. Chavon will attend the conference titled "Congressional Forum." On Saturday, Imperial Skilled Care Nursing Facility, 2141 Tod Ave., in which Chavon is a volunteer, will host a spaghetti dinner and bake sale from 2 to 4 p.m. to help raise funds for Chavon's trip. YOUNGSTOWN -- Candidates for Youngstown mayor and council president will have the opportunity to voice their opinions on where the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community fits into Youngstown's future and meet the voters at the "Dialogue with the Candidates 2005." The event will be at 7 p.m. April 23 at The Pride Center, First Unitarian Church, 1105 Elm St.
