Veterans groups vie for old school property

Supervisors will meet with both groups to discuss their proposals.
HILLSVILLE, Pa. -- Two different veterans groups would like the former Edinburg School property on Erie Street, Edinburg.
Phillip Kelly, of Mohawk VFW Post 267, Bessemer, attended Tuesday's meeting of the Mahoning Township supervisors with several other post members. He said his group would like to use the building for a post home. The school property is owned by the township.
Township resident Tom Duncan said his group, the Edinburg Veterans Memorial Association, indicated interest some time ago in the property and recently became incorporated so it could accept the property from the township.
Kelly said after the meeting he had not been aware of Duncan's group's interest in the property. Duncan stated flatly it is not possible for the two groups to cooperate in use of the property.
Supervisors Gary Pezzuolo and Poncho Exposito said they will meet with both groups to discuss proposals for the property, which was deeded to the township years ago. Supervisor Vito Yeropoli was out of town and did not attend the meeting.

In other business at Tuesday's meeting, supervisors:
UAnnounced that the state Department of Community and Economic Development has approved a $500,000 grant for the $1 million Edinburg water project. Pezzuolo said this means the project will definitely go forward. Other funding will come from the water company and from residents tap-in fees. The project will not go out for bids.
UHired James and Linda Farris to administer the grant for $40 an hour and $8 an hour for clerical work. Theirs was the only bid received for the work.
UAnnounced a public meeting at noon April 29 at the community building. Water company officials will be on hand to answer questions about water projects. A free lunch will be served, but reservations are required by calling the township office, (724) 667-8352.
UHeard Police Chief Jim Morris report that police handled 273 incidents in March and reported a "huge" increase in traffic citations during the month.
UAnnounced the Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary will hold a spaghetti dinner to benefit the fire department from noon to 4 p.m. April 24 at the Community Center. Cost is $5 for the general public and $4.50 for senior citizens.
