YOUNGSTOWN Girl, homeowner injured in house fire

Candle making suspected as the cause of the blaze, authorities said.
YOUNGSTOWN -- An 11-year-old girl was taken to the burn unit at Akron Children's Hospital Medical Center on Sunday after she was injured in a fire at her home on Maywood Drive.
Because she is a juvenile, Youngstown Fire Department Battalion Chief Tim McGarry did not reveal her name. Her condition was not available from the hospital Sunday night.
The homeowner, Katrine Edwards, 32, was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
The fire started around 12:40 p.m. Sunday. According to McGarry, someone in the house was making candles and hot wax was out of control. Damage to the house was limited to the second floor and was estimated at $1,000, McGarry said.

Earlier Sunday, a vacant house at McGuffey and Liberty roads was destroyed in a blaze. Firefighters answered a call at 7:12 a.m. and worked about three hours to keep the fire from spreading to a neighboring house and a church, McGarry said. Damage to the home was estimated at about $7,000, McGarry said.
The cause is still under investigation.
