Mahoning sheriff's officeto share in Ohio grant
COLUMBUS -- The Mahoning County Sheriff's Office will get $6,175 as part of Marine Patrol Grants being shared by 30 Ohio law enforcement agencies.
The local agency's share of a total of $547,638 in grants will assist in efforts to enforce laws and maintain boating safety on state waterways in the county.
Funding for these Marine Patrol Grants comes from the Waterways Safety Fund, which is administered by the ODNR Division of Watercraft. The fund consists of watercraft registration and titling fees, a fractional percentage of the state gasoline sales tax and funding from the U.S. Coast Guard. A minimum 25 percent local match is required of grant recipients.
Boaters warned aboutspring storm hazards
COLUMBUS -- Ohio's unpredictable spring weather can sometimes present strong and violent storms with high winds, lightning, hail and even tornadoes. To ensure a fun and safe day on the water, recreational boaters are encouraged to take certain precautions before heading out this spring.
Basic safety guidelines include: checking weather forecasts before departing, filing a float plan with your marina, knowing your boat's limitations, having a properly operating VHF marine band radio on board, and wearing an approved lifejacket.

Fishing clinic set
Every year, more and more women are finding that hunting, camping, and hiking are not just for men and fishing can now be added to that list -- steelhead fishing to be precise. Ohio has excellent "steelheading" opportunities, so take advantage of them by learning to fish for these silver torpedoes at a fun, informative lesson for interested women April 16 hosted by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife in conjunction with Lake Metroparks.
Both fly-fishing and spin casting for steelhead will be taught. Instruction will be by some of the most knowledgeable steelhead anglers in Northeast Ohio, including Jeff Liskay and Steve Madewell.
This steelhead fishing program will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Chagrin River Park Rural Road Entrance. The program will include many topics such as: life history of the steelhead, clothing to wear, gear and gadgets to use, how to "read" the water, and even offer some riverside instruction. Some equipment will be available, but participants are encouraged to bring their own waders, favorite noodle rod or fly fishing outfit, and proper clothing for the weather. PENNSYLVANIA
CWD not found in samplesof hunter-killed deer
HARRISBURG -- Chronic wasting disease was not detected in samples taken from hunter-killed deer during the state's 2004 hunting season, according to Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Vern Ross.
Based on a significant increase in the number of deer samples collected for testing, Ross noted that the test results took two additional weeks to complete this year. In 2004, 3,699 hunter-killed deer samples were collected for testing, compared to the 2,003 deer sampled in 2003. Last year's results for CWD also were negative. Results showing that the CWD tests of hunter-killed elk from 2004 were all negative and were announced March 24.
