Schiavo case will be topic for contest



NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Lawrence County Bar Association is sponsoring its annual Law Day Essay Contest, which provides two college scholarships.
The contest is open to high school seniors who are college bound and will graduate in this spring from public high schools in Lawrence County.
The topic selected for the Law Day 2005 Essay Contest is: Whether it was appropriate for the President and the United States Congress to grant the federal courts jurisdiction in the Terri Schiavo case?
Essays submitted must be typed, double-spaced, limited to the topic selected, contain no fewer than 500 words and no more than 1,000 words. Submissions must include student's full name, address, telephone number and school represented. Relatives of members of the Lawrence County Bar Association cannot qualify.
Two winners will be chosen. Each winner will be the recipient of a $1,500 scholarship award to be presented May 2 in Court Room No. 1 at the Lawrence County Government Center.
The deadline for submission is April 21 by 5 p.m. The essays shall be either hand delivered or mailed to: Lawrence County Bar Association, Law Day 2005 Essay Committee, c/o John W. Flannery, Esquire, 300 Sky Bank Building, 14 N. Mercer St., New Castle, Pa. 16101.
