ON CAMPUS Capraruolo leads Akron's offense

Center fielder Andy Capraruolo is playing his final season for the University of Akron baseball team.
The 5-foot-10, 185-pound senior, a Boardman High graduate, started 52 games for the Zips last year and led the team with a .299 average, earning the team's Joe Thomas award.
He led the team in multiple hits (14), runs scored (37) and on-base percentage (.482) from his leadoff position. His 29 RBIs were third on the squad.
Heading into this season, he had a .969 putout average with a career-high nine putouts against Cleveland State and a career-best three runs scored and three hits in a 4-3 victory over Pittsburgh last year.
He was tabbed UA defensive player on the squad and his 17 HBPs ranks third on the Zips' all-time single-season list.
Capraruolo had a .294 three-year average entering the 2005 campaign with 57 hits in 194 at bats, 43 runs scored, 14 doubles, two triples, two home runs, 31 RBIs, three stolen bases and 151 putouts.
Majoring in business, his sister Mara plays on the UA volleyball team.
Darek Stanfield, of Columbiana, one of the top closers in the nation last year, is tied for fifth nationally among returning save leaders, with 12.
The 6-0, 180, right handed pitcher, Stanfield (3-2), appeared in a school-record 29 appearances in 2004, worked 33 2/3 innings, allowed 33 hits, struck out 27 and walked 11.
A first-team All Mid-American Conference selection for the Zips, his 12 saves in 14 chances also set a UA single-season record.
Pat Watt, a junior and Frank Turocy, a freshman, are members of the UA team.
Watt (6-2, 205) is a Struthers High graduate and one of the top pitchers on the Zips' staff. As a redshirt sophomore last season, he made 16 appearances, including a staff high-tying 13 starts and compiled a 3-6 record, with 57 strikeouts and 41 walks in 63 innings.
Turocy, a pitcher-outfielder, will redshirt the season as he rehabs from elbow surgery. The Canfield athlete is a promising two-way prospect.
Wittenberg
Senior Norah Gillam, a Canfield native, has posted a 3-6 record and a 3.00 ERA this season in 53 2/3 innings for the Tigers' softball team. She leads Wittenberg with 22 strikeouts.
Hiram
In a doubleheader sweep of Kenyon 6-3 and 9-4, John Prejsnar, a senior, of New Castle (3-1) struck out five, walked two and scattered seven hits to earn a complete game win.
Mercyhurst
Freshman infielder Dan Bertolini of Poland has appeared in 17 baseball games for Mercyhurst College (8-11-1). Batting .340, he has 17 hits in 50 trips to the plate, with one double and 5 RBIs.
Freshman pitcher John Morris (1-0) of New Castle has appeared in seven games, working 12 2/3 innings. He has three strikeouts, four walks and a 2.13 ERA.
Jen Feret has helped the Mercyhurst softball team to an 10-5 record.
A sophomore pitcher (6-0), the Boardman High graduate, has appeared in 10 games, six of them starts, including a 2-0 victory over Mercyhurst in her last outing, her third shutout of the season.
She threw a complete game, allowed only four hits, struck out seven and walked two.
Ohio Northern
Sophomore Josh Conkey, Ursuline High graduate, leads the Polar Bear baseball team (10-5, 1-1 Ohio Athletic Conference) with a .462 average. He's played in 14 games, 12 as a starter. He has 18 hits in 39 trips to the plate with one triple and 13 RBIs.
Denison
Allison Lesnett, a senior on the Big Red women's tennis team, has gone 4-1 this season playing singles. The Canfield native has also been a solid doubles player. She and partner Erin Gorsich won their last six matches and are 7-3 overall.
Gannon
Joanna Fergus, a Fitch graduate, has helped the Gannon women's softball team rank among the Great Lakes region top 10 according to the initial NCAA Division II regional poll released Thursday.
She leads the Lady Knights with a .450 average. The junior first baseman also leads the team in hits (27), doubles (6), RBIs (23) and total bases (42).
